At Wigwam Self Storage, our commitment to the safety and security of your items is unwavering. We take extensive measures to ensure their protection. However, certain unforeseen events like fire, flood, and infestations are beyond our control. For instance, if a neighbouring customer failed to properly defrost their freezer before storing it, water leakage could damage your belongings in the storage unit.
Ordinarily, standard home insurance policies do not extend coverage to items stored away from your home address, such as in a self-storage facility. Even the few that do offer coverage often exclude various specific storage-related risks.
To ensure peace of mind for all parties, we insist that every customer maintains contents protection for their stored goods throughout their time in our self-storage facility. This is why we’ve developed a tailored solution designed precisely to meet your storage requirements.
Contents Protection Cover
Our Contents Protection Cover provides protection against an extensive array of potential risks. This includes but is not limited to:
- Physical loss or damage caused by burst pipes or water leakage
- Theft involving forcible entry or exit
- Damage from moths, insects, or vermin originating externally
- Fire, lightning, explosion, earthquake, storm, riot, strike, civil commotion, malicious damage, impact by vehicles and aircraft.
It is a condition of the Licence Agreement that all of the property you store is insured for its full replacement value (on a new for old basis) and that such cover is maintained at all times.
Preserving Your Home Insurance Benefits
Our cover is exclusively tailored to your items in storage, which means it won’t affect your ‘no claims’ status on your home insurance policy or any future claims you might make on your home insurance.
Customised Coverage for You
Your contents protection quote is based on the full replacement value of your stored items.
To get an estimate, calculate the replacement value of the items you plan to store and contact us for a quote. Coverage starts the moment you place your valuables in self-storage and remains in effect until you retrieve them.
Providing Your Own Self-Storage Cover
We recommend you take out our contents protection cover in the first instance, even if you wish to arrange your own policy or are unsure if you already have cover. This ensures your goods are protected and we will refund you the Contents Protection charges in full once proof of cover is supplied within 14 days of your move in.
Your own insurance must cover items stored in a self-storage facility. Not all household insurance policies extend coverage to stored possessions, so you will need to verify if your policy includes self-storage protection.
If you choose not to use our cover you must provide proof of your coverage. Your insurance should cover goods stored in a self-storage facility and specify the storage company’s name along with the full postal address of the premises.
Historically, customers that have procured their own insurance let it lapse over time. Unfortunately, this means that they couldn’t make claims in cases of unfortunate incidents or provide compensation if their stored items caused damage to others’ belongings.
Maintaining valid and up-to-date storage unit insurance documentation is your responsibility.
If you do not opt for our Contents Protection Cover, our standard terms limit Wigwam’s liability for your goods to a maximum of £100.
Items Prohibited from Storage at Wigwam Self Storage
Certain items are not permitted for storage at our facilities, including but not limited to:
- Fireworks
- Weapons or munitions
- Explosives
- Perishable goods
- Flammable substances
- Toxic, pollutant, or contaminated items
- Cash and securities
- Living creatures
- Radioactive materials, chemicals, biological agents, or asbestos
- Tyres
- Battery charging boosters, power inverters, power generators
- Items emitting fumes, odours, or smells
- Illegally obtained or illegal goods
- High-value items requiring specialized storage
- Cremation ashes
- Waste
