The time to pack up your bedroom is here…

As you look around, piles of clothes, books, and knick-knacks seem to have appeared out of nowhere. How did you end up with three different copies of the same book? And when did your collection of stray socks double? It’s enough to send Marie Kondo into a panic. But breathe out — there is an easier way.

Channelling the advice of expert movers and packers, this guide provides straightforward, fuss-free steps to efficiently pack your bedroom on a tight schedule. Read on for valuable tips that will simplify the process, save you time, and, dare we say, make packing a little bit enjoyable.

How To Start Packing Your Bedroom

A homeowner packs up their bedroom for a move, sorting their clothes into boxes they want to keep, donate, and store.

Kick off your packing by zeroing in on what truly matters. Scan through each drawer and shelf, and separate your essentials from things you’ve barely used. It’s a golden chance to purge the unnecessary and minimise what you’ll lug to your new space. For those items that you rarely use but don’t have space for, self storage is a good option!

Once you’ve decided on what’s coming with you, stock up on packing essentials like boxes, tape, and markers. Tackle the items you won’t need any time soon, such as out-of-season sports gear and extra linens. Be sure to clearly label each box with its contents and the room it belongs in for a smoother unpacking process.

How Long Should It Take To Pack a Bedroom?

The time it takes to pack a bedroom will depend on the number of items you have and how good your packing skills are. Typically, expect to spend about four to six hours packing a standard bedroom. A more cluttered or larger space could require up to a full day.

How To Pack Your Bedroom in 5 Easy Steps

Bedroom linen and bedding are bundled up and packed into a box during a move.

Step 1: Tackle Clothes & Footwear

Pack your clothes and shoes first. Use wardrobe boxes for dresses, suits, and items that need to hang. Roll other clothes and pack them in suitcases or boxes, using every bit of free space.

Step 2: Bundle Up Bedding & Linens

Pack all your bedding, including sheets, blankets, and pillowcases, along with other linens like towels. These bulky items work well in larger boxes. Label each box clearly so you know exactly what’s inside when you arrive at your new home.

Step 3: Protect Electronics

Carefully pack electronics such as alarm clocks, speakers, and lamps. If possible, use their original packaging. Otherwise, wrap them securely in bubble wrap and place them in well-marked boxes to avoid damage.

Step 4: Wrap Decorations & Fragile Items

Handle decorations, framed photos, and other fragile items with extra care. Wrap them in bubble wrap or packing paper and place them in clearly labelled boxes. Don’t forget to include any hanging items like wall art or mirrors which may need special attention during the move.

Step 5: Label Everything & Make an Inventory

Label each box with a detailed description of its contents and the room it’s for. Keep a packing inventory to track what you’ve packed and to ensure nothing is missing or misplaced. Trust us; this list will come in handy when you unpack and set up your new bedroom.

Packing Tips for a Stress-Free Move

A homeowner safely stores items from their bedroom in a Wigwam self storage unit.

When it comes to moving, knowing a few clever packing tricks can lighten the load. Here are some handy tips that might not be so obvious but can make a huge difference:

Pack an Overnight Bag

Imagine arriving at your new place, tired from the move, and all you want is a quick shower and sleep. Pack a bag with your pyjamas, a fresh outfit, toiletries, and maybe your favourite book so you don’t have to dig through boxes when you’re exhausted.

Leave Clothes on Hangers

Instead of folding clothes into a box where they’ll just get wrinkled, keep them on their hangers. Slip a trash bag over them for protection, and they’re ready to go. It saves ironing time later!

Sock It to Fragile Items

Got glasses or small vases? Slip them into socks for a snug, cushiony ride to your new place. It’s a neat hack to protect your fragile items without spending extra on bubble wrap.

Use Egg Cartons for Jewellery

Tangled necklaces in a moving box are a nightmare. Lay them out in egg cartons, snap the carton shut, and your jewellery stays put and tangle-free.

Label Your Cables

Before you unplug, label each cable and wire. When you’re setting up in your new home, you’ll know exactly what goes where, saving you from a major electronic puzzle.

Take Pictures Before Disassembling

If you’re taking apart any furniture, snap a few pics first. These can be lifesavers when you’re standing among pieces trying to remember how it all fits back together.

Don’t Overload Your Book Boxes

Books are heavier than they look. Pack them in smaller boxes so you can lift them without throwing your back out.

Think About Storage

If you’ve got too much stuff and not enough space, consider a storage unit. It keeps your excess belongings safe and out of the way so you can focus on settling into your new space without clutter.

Lenny was great at helping me get my storage over the phone, and was engaging and fun. I also received some help from a nice guy at the location; I think his name is Adam, a very lovely fellow. Friendly staff they've got. First time using a storage unit, and it was seamless to set up and easy to use the app without any confusion. The price was also really affordable, beyond what I assumed it would be, and I still got a 50% discount for the first 8 weeks. I highly recommend Wigwam.
