Flammable liquids

Flammable liquids are liquids that give off vapour which can catch fire from a spark or flame, such as petrol, paraffin, white spirit, many paints and thinners, and some cleaning solvents. The vapour is what ignites, so a leaking tin is a fire risk.

At Wigwam

You can't store them. Clause 18(c) of our terms says you must not store "combustible or flammable substances including but not limited to gas, paint, petrol, oil, cleaning solvents or compressed gases".

Two tests follow:

  • Named in the clause. Paint, petrol, oil and cleaning solvents are named, so they stay out even without a warning symbol.
  • The label. For anything else, look for the flame symbol or the word "flammable". Perfume, nail varnish, alcohol-based hand gel and methylated spirits can all carry it. If the label shows it, it stays out. No symbol doesn't rule an item in: clause 18(c) also covers combustible substances, and perfume, cosmetics and drinks don't have to carry the symbol, so if it isn't named, ask us on 0800 2545585.

Aerosols can't be stored, flame symbol or not: an aerosol is a pressurised can of gas, and clause 18(c) bars "compressed gases".

If you're clearing a garage, or storing trade stock

Clearing a garage or shed: a mower, strimmer or camping stove with fuel in it can't come in as it is. A petrol mower or strimmer can go in once it's been run completely dry: the fuel tank emptied, the carburettor run until the engine stops, and the engine oil drained. If it still smells of fuel, leave it out, and keep the fuel itself somewhere else. Fuel cans can't be stored, even empty.

Decorators, salons and online sellers: the label test is the starting point, but some stock is out whatever the label says, such as bulk fragrance oils. Our FAQ on flammable stock for your business goes product by product.

Flammable liquids vs hazardous goods

Flammable liquids are one kind of hazardous goods. Clause 18 also bars chemicals and "any item that emits fumes, or odours", so a liquid that won't burn can still be barred.
