Witney and Carterton both end up at the same yard when it comes to storage. That much is true. But we’ve been doing this long enough to know that “both near Chipping Norton” is where the useful thinking stops and the lazy thinking starts. A Witney household packing up a market-town terrace and a Carterton family working to a posting date are not living the same week, even if the drive is the same length. This page treats them as what they are: two different roads in.

If you’re coming from Witney, skip to the Witney road.
If you’re coming from Carterton, skip to the Carterton road.
If you just want to know what’s waiting at Chipping Norton either way, skip to what both roads lead to.

Two Roads, One Yard

Witney and Carterton both sit within easy reach of Wigwam’s Chipping Norton site, and both get a fair, direct road in on this page rather than one paragraph shared between them. Witney is a working market town with its own rhythm; Carterton runs to a different clock entirely, set by the base next door rather than the school calendar. Same yard at the end, two genuinely different reasons for making the trip.

The Witney Road

Witney is a market town first, and everything else second. Saturday still means the market under the Buttercross, the Windrush still runs through the middle of town, and the high street has been trading for centuries, not decades. Storage, for most Witney households and small businesses, is a practical errand that fits around that week, not an expedition into “the Cotswolds.”

What Witney’s storage catchment actually looks like

If you’re clearing a house near the Buttercross, moving a business out of a unit on the high street, or simply running out of space in a terrace that was never built with a garage, Chipping Norton is a short, direct run out from Witney.

The kind of move this suits

This road suits a house move, a declutter that’s got out of hand, or a small business that’s outgrown its stockroom. Witney isn’t an afterthought bolted onto somewhere else’s catchment; it gets its own road in because it’s a genuine local option, not a detour.

The Carterton Road

Carterton runs to a different calendar. With RAF Brize Norton next door, the town’s year is shaped by postings and quarters turning over, not by school terms. Families arrive and leave on the station’s timetable, often with less notice than a house move usually allows, and that changes what “moving house” actually looks like.

Why Carterton’s rhythm is different

Brize Norton isn’t incidental to Carterton, it’s part of the town’s identity. The base sits close enough that it was nearly named RAF Carterton itself, and the station holds the Freedom of the Town of Carterton, a civic tie that goes well beyond two places simply being near each other. That closeness is why storage in Carterton so often runs on a posting date rather than a house-completion date.

What that means for storage timing

If your move is being set by orders rather than a moving day chosen months in advance, the storage part shouldn’t be the thing slowing you down. You need somewhere that can work to a tighter turnaround, not somewhere geared purely around a conventional house sale. The road in from Carterton is just as short and just as known as the one from Witney; only the reason for the trip looks different, which is exactly what this page is built to recognise.

What Both Roads Lead To

Whichever road brought you here, you arrive at the same facility with the same terms. Nothing about what’s on offer changes depending on which town you started in.

Access and entry

Chipping Norton is open seven days a week, 6am to 10pm. The site is unmanned, so if you need a courier or a third party to collect or drop off on your behalf, someone from your own business needs to be there in person to let them in. Entry itself is smart entry, no fobs to track down, no gatehouse to time your visit around.

Container storage, if that’s the fit

Chipping Norton also runs genuine container storage alongside standard units, clean, dry and secure outdoor containers for anyone who wants that format rather than an indoor unit. It’s a straightforward option, not a headline feature.

Deposit and leaving

Three things happen when you take a unit and later leave it: a deposit is taken at the start, you give fourteen days’ notice when you want to leave, and any days you’ve already paid for but not used are refunded. Those are three separate facts, not one blended promise, and we’d rather you knew all three up front than found the middle one out later.

What the Team Can (and Can’t) Help With

Our team is good at sizing a unit, checking availability, sorting access and pricing, and getting a booking done. What they won’t do is discuss your business plans, or offer legal, insurance, or relocation advice. They’re not being cagey, they simply know where their expertise ends.

For anyone moving on a tighter timeline

If your move is running to someone else’s schedule, here’s the honest split: we can get a unit ready fast and make the storage part simple, but we’re not the ones to ask about the wider logistics of your move.

However you got here, get a quote for Chipping Norton and see what a straightforward unit looks like, no pressure, no obligation.

Whichever Road You Came In On

A market town and a forces town, treated as the separate places they are, arriving at one yard. That’s the whole idea behind this page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, both towns sit within reasonable reach of the site. We haven’t pinned an exact mileage or drive time to either route here, since that’s the kind of figure that’s better checked against a map on the day than quoted as a fixed number, but both are genuinely short, familiar drives rather than a trek into the Cotswolds.

The site is unmanned, so a courier or anyone else acting on your behalf can only get in if someone from your own business is there in person at the time.

Yes. Chipping Norton has genuine container storage alongside standard units, clean, dry and secure, for anyone who prefers that format.

You give fourteen days’ notice, and any days you’ve already paid for but not used are refunded. The deposit itself is taken at the start of your booking, it isn’t waived.

No, and we’ll say that outright rather than hint around it. The team can help with sizing, availability, access, pricing, and booking, but they won’t discuss your business plans or give legal, insurance, or relocation advice. For anything beyond storage itself, you’ll want to speak to the right specialist for that part of the move.

I have used the storage at Cheltenham for nearly two years now and have always been glad I made the change from a large facility in Kingsditch. I recall leaving a glowing review of Casey and his team when I first took on the unit. Just yesterday I left a less than complimentary review but have discovered my frustration at the time was due to misleading info I obtained over the Internet and nothing to do with Wigwam. So that review is withdrawn and I continue to recommend Wigwam as a convenient town centre facility, well run and utilising a high tech, easy to use entry system.
