Can I stand a sofa on its end in storage?

Usually, yes: you can stand it on its end (store it vertically), and it's one of the best ways to save floor space: our own packing guides suggest it. Two checks come first. The frame has to be able to take it, so sofa beds, recliners and anything with a mechanism need the maker's say-so. And height: a sofa on its end is as tall as its length, and tipping it up inside the unit needs more headroom still, because it swings through the diagonal of its length and its depth or height, whichever is bigger. So measure its length, depth and height and give us all three when you ask about a unit, because we don't publish unit or door heights and they vary between sites.

Will your sofa take being stood on end?

Our house-move packing guide puts it simply: "Sofas can be stood on one end to save floor space; check that the frame can bear this before you do it." Standing it up puts the whole weight of the sofa through one arm and the frame behind it, so the frame is the thing to check.

Type of sofa Before you stand it up
Standard two or three-seater, fixed frame Our guide's test applies: "check that the frame can bear this". Take the feet and loose cushions off first. If the feet don't come off, ask the maker first
Sofa bed Check the maker's instructions. If they don't cover it, or you can't find them, keep it on its feet
Flat-pack sofa or futon frame Take it apart where it comes apart, and store the frame flat or against a wall. Our self storage tips say "Always dismantle any large furniture items beforehand", and our bungalow guide notes that "the backs and arms of some sofas" come off. If it won't come apart, treat it as a sofa bed. Our guides don't cover which way up a futon mattress should go; see how to store a mattress
Recliner or any powered or moving parts As for a sofa bed: the maker's instructions decide. If it has a battery pack, our terms (clause 20) bar lithium-ion batteries over 160Wh "unless they are built-in and cannot be removed", and bar "portable battery chargers, power banks or any similar portable power source", so ask us before you bring it
Corner or modular sofa Our guides don't cover standing corner or armless sections on end. Keep them on their feet unless the maker says otherwise, and ask us about sizing
Antique or fragile frame Keep it on its feet
Rolled arms or a heavy frame If the arm it would stand on isn't flat, or the sofa is too heavy for two people to lower slowly, keep it on its feet or have your removal firm do it

Will it fit standing up?

Here is a worked example, using a sofa 2m long, 90cm deep and 85cm high:

On its feet On its end
Floor space about 19.4 sq ft about 8.2 sq ft
Height once standing 85cm 2m (about 6ft 7in)
Headroom to tip it up inside the unit about 2.2m (7ft 2in), its diagonal

So standing it up can more than halve the floor it takes, but height is the catch. As you tip it up, the far corner sweeps through the diagonal of its length and its depth or height, whichever is bigger: about 2.2m here, so the ceiling has to clear that, not just the 2m. The door only needs to clear the length if you carry the sofa in already standing. The English Sofa Company's delivery checklist asks whether the ceiling clears the sofa ("Ceiling Height > Sofa Width?"); tipping it up inside needs the diagonal too.

We don't publish ceiling or door heights, and they differ between our sites and floors. Our terms (clause 26) say "Unit sizes are approximate", and that if you have exact requirements you must check with us before signing. So measure your sofa's length (arm to arm), depth and height, give us all three when you call 0800 2545585 before you book, and ask us to check them against the unit's height and its door. If the unit is upstairs, ask us about the lift or stair height too.

Students and small units: can standing it up get me a smaller unit?

Floor space sets your unit size. Our room-by-room size guide says a three-seat sofa takes about 20 to 25 sq ft of floor on its feet, and that a 25 sq ft unit "works well for students clearing a rented room" but "does not comfortably hold a sofa". It sizes a one-bed flat, sofa included, at 50 sq ft. Stood on end, the example sofa takes about 8 sq ft rather than about 19, so standing it on end may let a smaller unit work. Some sites list units below 25 sq ft: our Bath price page mentions a compact 10 sq ft unit, and our student storage page mentions small 16 sq ft units. A sofa on its end may suit a small unit, but only if its length, and the diagonal to tip it, clear that unit's height, so ask us first. Tell us the combined footprint of everything you're storing and we'll suggest a size. On our September 2026 price lists, the median (middle value) of the listed prices across our sites is about £78 per four weeks for 25 sq ft and about £143 for 50 sq ft, so check your own site's price. Nothing is added at checkout: the total in your quote is what you pay, and our prices include VAT.

How to stand a sofa on its end

  1. Clean and dry it. Our furniture guide warns that moisture trapped in storage leads to mould. Don't pack it on a wet day.
  2. Take off the feet and cushions. Our furniture guide says to remove legs and cushions and keep bolts and screws in labelled bags. Tape the bag to the frame.
  3. Wrap it for the move. Our renovation guide describes "a sofa on its end, wrapped in furniture blankets". Our Box Shop sells a Furniture Blanket (1500 x 2000mm) for £5.00, a Sofa Cover for two to three seaters for £4.99 and Foam Corner Protectors for £3.49 (September 2026 prices).
  4. Lift, don't drag. The Cotswold Company's care guide says to lift a sofa "from the base on either end" rather than drag it, which can damage the legs and joints. Tip it up slowly, with a person at each end.
  5. Stand it on a level base. The same guide warns that "Damage to the sofa frame can occur on uneven surfaces". Stand it on the flat unit floor with a folded blanket under the arm it stands on.
  6. Put it against a wall, freestanding. Load it early, against a back or side wall, as our 3-bed guide suggests. Our terms (clause 22(d)) don't allow you to attach anything to the unit's walls, so no screws, hooks or fixed straps: it has to stand steadily on its own.
  7. Keep weight off it and air around it. We'd not load boxes on top of an upturned sofa. Leave a small gap round it so air can move, as our furniture tips advise.

Covers, leather and damp

A sofa cover keeps off dirt and handling marks in the van, but ours is polythene, and our furniture guide says: "Avoid plastic covers that trap moisture; use breathable fabrics instead to let air circulate." Some of our pages suggest plastic ("Wrapping your furniture in plastic or covering it with furniture pads"), but for a stay in the unit our furniture-mistakes guide advises breathable covers. So in the unit, take the polythene off and lay a cloth cover over it instead. A blanket may seem the obvious choice, but our Furniture Blanket's page doesn't say whether it breathes, so a cotton sheet or old duvet cover is the safe choice.

That matters most for leather. Our furniture guide warns of finding mould on "that once-pristine leather sofa". The Cotswold Company's leather care guide advises keeping leather away from direct heat; wipe it with a soft, dry cloth before it goes in. Whether standing on one arm leaves pressure marks on leather isn't covered by our guides, so if that worries you, ask the maker first. Our units aren't heated or climate-controlled, so read whether storage units get cold in winter before a long stay.

Storing a sofa for a let, a business or someone else

Landlords, home stagers and offices: send us each sofa's length, depth and height and we'll suggest a size. Our landlords' furniture guide notes "A two-week minimum stay" at your nearest site; ask us how a stay that isn't a whole number of four-week periods is billed. For a parent's or late relative's sofa whose frame you can't vouch for, keep it on its feet and book the floor space. Our page on storing someone else's belongings covers the rules.

Already storing with us?

Measure its length, depth and height and check the ceiling clears the tipping diagonal before you try. Clear the space first, and don't tip it up alone. Access is normally 6am to 10pm (check your site's page).
