Can I visit my storage unit as often as I like, including weekends?

Yes. There's no limit on how many times you visit and no charge for visiting: you can drop things off, take them out or swap them round as often as you like while the site is open. That's normally 6am to 10pm, seven days a week, Saturdays and Sundays included, and your site's page gives its hours; Cheltenham's published hours currently disagree, so check with that site first (details below). What we ask in return is simple: keep your account paid up (access depends on it), lock your unit whenever you step away from it, and don't leave anything in the corridors between trips. The one thing to plan for at weekends is the office: it normally closes at 2pm on Saturday and all day Sunday (the table below gives your site's hours; Bath's closes at 3pm on Saturday, and Dorking's is closed all weekend), so on your first visit, have smart entry set up before you arrive.

What "as often as you like" covers

Access is included in what you pay for the unit. Our site pages call it "unlimited free access", and that's meant literally: there's no count of visits and no fee for coming in on a Sunday, or three times in one day.

You can also change what's in the unit whenever you like. Bring more in, take things away, fetch one box and leave the rest. Taking some things out, even most of them, is just another visit; it's only ending your storage altogether that needs notice, which our guide to giving notice to leave your unit explains. The only limits on what goes in are the ones on our prohibited goods list, and those apply on every visit, not just the first.

Each visit works the same way. Smart entry on your phone lets you into the site and your unit, and your phone also sets and unsets your unit's alarm as you arrive and leave (at Chipping Norton the alarm uses a PIN code instead). If smart entry ever lets you down, see what to do if smart entry won't open the gate.

Weekends, Sundays and bank holidays

Access hours and office hours are different things. You can get in from 6am to 10pm every day, but the office, where you can reach us by phone, keeps shorter hours:

Site Office, weekdays Office, Saturday Office, Sunday
Alton, Bristol Hengrove, Bromsgrove, Burton-on-Trent, Cheltenham, Chipping Norton, Leatherhead, Lincoln, March, Marlow, Reading, Shipston-on-Stour, Tewkesbury, Warminster 9am to 6pm 9am to 2pm Closed
Bath 8:30am to 5pm 9am to 3pm Not listed; ask the site
Dorking 8:30am to 5:30pm Closed Closed

You can move on a Sunday, but plan for the office being closed: if something goes wrong at the gate, there may be nobody to ring until Monday. For a first visit, we'll text you instructions to set up smart entry before your move-in date. Set it up at home, then make a short test visit on a weekday, or make your first trip during office hours, so you can reach us by phone if anything needs sorting. If entry does fail at a weekend, follow what to do if smart entry won't open the gate. If you don't have a smartphone, tell us when you book and we can give you a fob instead.

For bank holidays, ask us before you plan around one: call 0800 2545585 during office hours.

Cheltenham. The Cheltenham page currently shows two different sets of access hours: 6am to 10pm, and Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm with weekends and bank holidays 10am to 4pm. Until that's put right, if your unit is in Cheltenham, call the site on 01242 800270 to confirm the hours before planning an early, late or weekend visit.

Lots of trips during a move

If you're moving across a weekend in several loads, a few of our rules matter more than usual:

  • Keep the corridors clear. Our terms don't allow items to be left in shared spaces, and anything left unattended in a common area or outside your unit can be treated as abandoned and removed. Take each load straight into the unit rather than staging it in the corridor for the next trip.
  • Lock up every time you walk away, even for a quick run back to the van. Our terms make you responsible for keeping your unit locked whenever you're not in it, and for securing external gates or doors where your site has them.
  • Parking in the customer car park is free while you unload, so you can keep the van close.
  • Keep an eye on the insured value. Your goods must stay insured for their full replacement value, and the total value in the unit mustn't go over the figure on your agreement. If you keep adding things, check that figure still covers them, and call us to update it if not. Our guide to working out a full replacement value helps.
  • If the unit fills faster than you planned, you can move to a bigger or smaller unit if one is free.

If you'd like a hand with the heavy lifting, we can recommend local removals and man-and-van firms. Our minimum stay is two weeks, which suits the gap between one home and the next; our guide to storage when moving house covers the rest of that process.

Visiting often for work

Tradespeople, market traders and online sellers can visit as often as the work needs: first thing for tools, back in the evening, stock checks at the weekend. What our terms rule out is using the unit as the workplace. It's for storage only, so it can't be an office or workshop, and it can't be your business or mailing address. Our article on running a business from a storage unit explains where that line falls.

If you're loading a van several times a week, ask about drive-up units: we have a limited number at Chipping Norton, Shipston-on-Stour and Warminster, where you can drive right up to the unit. At other sites, you can park free in the customer car park while you unload. For couriers and colleagues, see whether a removals firm or courier can drop off without you and sharing access with a family member or colleague.

When you might not get in

Unlimited doesn't mean unconditional. Our terms let us refuse access if money is owed on the account, or if we believe someone's safety or the security of the site is at risk. Keeping payments up to date is the simplest way to avoid finding the gate closed to you.

We can also change access hours temporarily to other reasonable times. We'll try to warn you in advance by a notice at the site, text or email, but the terms allow us to do it without notice where we have to.

Access outside 6am to 10pm is a separate arrangement: it has to be agreed with us, it's shown on your agreement, and it can carry an extra charge. Our page on getting to your unit outside normal hours explains how that works.
