Moving house is stressful enough without guessing how far the next town is. The Fens are flat, working and unglamorous, and nobody hands you a mental map when you relocate here. If you’re shifting a house between March, Wisbech, Chatteris or Whittlesey, you don’t need drama and you don’t need a joke. You need the real distances, stated once, so you can get on with the move.

In a hurry? Start here.

  • Moving within the Fens (say, Chatteris to March): jump to the table below, then the split-household scenario if your move is staged.
  • Moving into the Fens from outside: start with where March actually sits, next.
  • Storing between two households mid-move: go straight to the split-household scenario.

Where March Actually Sits in the Fens

March sits inside a genuinely tight Fenland cluster. Wisbech, Chatteris and Whittlesey are all within 8 to 11 miles of it, not the sprawling catchment an urban assumption might picture. Out here, usefulness is measured per mile, not per postcode district, and that idea runs through everything below: every distance in this piece is a number you can act on, not a marketing softening.

Is March close to Wisbech, Chatteris and Whittlesey?

Yes. All three are within an easy working distance of March, each roughly a quarter of an hour to twenty-five minutes by road. None of them requires treating the move as a cross-county trek.

The Verified Distances, Once

Here is the spine of this page, sourced and stated plainly, so you don’t have to go looking for it again later.

Fenland town Distance from March Approx. drive time Source/basis
Wisbech 9 miles (14 km), compass distance, north of March About 15 to 20 minutes Wikipedia (compass distance; run a live route check for exact minutes)
Chatteris About 8 miles by road (7.6 to 7.9 miles both ways) About 15 minutes rome2rio, checked in both directions
Whittlesey 11 miles (18 km), compass distance, west of March About 20 to 25 minutes Wikipedia (compass distance; run a live route check for exact minutes)

A short note under that table: Wisbech and Whittlesey are straight-line figures, so the drive runs a little further; Chatteris is a genuine road distance, checked both ways (more on why that split matters below). Elsewhere on this page, we’ll simply say “the table above” rather than restate the figures each time.

March to Wisbech

Around 9 miles as the crow flies, north of March, with the drive a little longer, at roughly 15 to 20 minutes.

March to Chatteris

The closest of the three at around 8 miles by road, roughly 15 minutes, and the only one of the three checked as an actual road distance rather than a straight line.

March to Whittlesey

The furthest of the three at 11 miles as the crow flies, west of March, with a drive of roughly 20 to 25 minutes.

Compass Distance vs Road Distance: Why It Matters Here

Are these distances as the crow flies or by road?

Two of them, yes, and we’ve said so rather than letting you assume otherwise. A straight-line figure and an actual drive aren’t the same thing, and treating them as interchangeable is how moving days go wrong. Wisbech and Whittlesey are given as their sources state them, as compass distances, with the honest caveat that your actual drive runs a touch longer. Chatteris is the one figure here that’s a real road distance, cross-checked both ways. We’d rather tell you which is which than round it all into one tidy, misleading number.

How Fenland Distances Compare to City Distances

Ten miles here doesn’t behave like ten miles in a city. There’s no congestion charge to dodge, no run of motorway junctions to thread, no hour lost to traffic that never quite clears. A Fenland “far” and a city “far” are different units, and once you stop applying urban assumptions to a Fenland road, the numbers above stop feeling like an obstacle and start feeling like exactly what they are: a plan you can work around. That’s usefulness per mile again, doing its job.

Why does 10 miles feel different in the Fens?

Because the roads carry less friction. Straighter A-roads, fewer junctions, less congestion, and a drive that generally takes about as long as the distance suggests it should.

Storage Between the Villages: The Split-Household Scenario

Sometimes a move doesn’t land on a single day. Say you’re selling in March and your onward purchase in Chatteris completes three weeks later. That’s not a crisis, it’s a scheduling gap, and storage is what sits in the middle of it.

What if my move is split across two Fenland towns?

You store your belongings at the March site for the gap, and visit them whenever you need to, on an 8-mile, roughly 15-minute run each way, not a cross-county trek. That’s the practical meaning of “storage between the villages”: a literal midpoint that turns an awkward completion gap into something entirely manageable, because the distance involved is small and known in advance.

One thing worth flagging, since a split move often involves other people coming and going: the March site is unmanned, like every Wigwam site, so if a courier, van driver or anyone else needs to collect or drop something at the unit, someone from your own household needs to be there with them. Nobody on Wigwam’s team can meet them on your behalf.

What These Estimates Don’t Cover

Are these drive times guaranteed?

No, and we won’t pretend otherwise. Traffic, roadworks and, on the Fens specifically, seasonal flood-drainage works can add a few minutes to any of the routes above. Conditions vary. The distances themselves don’t change; the time on any given day might, a little.

The March Wigwam Site, Correctly Stated

What are the access hours and entry terms at the March site?

With the distances settled, here’s what the March site itself offers, stated straight, because usefulness per mile applies to the site’s own honesty as much as to the roads.

Access runs 6am to 10pm, seven days a week, not around the clock. Entry is by smart entry, not an app to fiddle with at the door. Taking a unit means a deposit plus 14 days’ notice when you leave, with unused days refunded: three separate terms, not a “no deposit” headline. Storage is clean, dry and secure, with no climate control on offer and none claimed. The March site holds household goods only, no vehicles, motorcycles or caravans, and no shipping containers either: that’s only at Wigwam’s Shipston-on-Stour, Chipping Norton and Warminster sites.

If a question comes up outside sizing, availability, access, pricing, invoicing or booking, for instance anything touching your own business plans, or legal or insurance advice, the support team will point you to the right professional rather than guess. That’s a boundary worth knowing about upfront, not discovering halfway through a call.

Now you know the distances, and now you know the terms. If the March site looks like the right fit, a quote is a few minutes away at quote.wigwamstorage.co.uk.

Fenland Storage FAQ

The three questions we hear most from movers in this exact catchment, answered directly.

Yes. All three sit within 8 to 11 miles of March, each roughly 15 to 25 minutes away by road. See the table above for the full breakdown by town.

They run with less friction: straighter roads, fewer junctions, no congestion charging, so the same number of miles generally takes less time than it would in a city.

Storage at the March site sits at the literal midpoint of a staged move, an 8-mile, roughly 15-minute run each way to visit your things. See the worked scenario above for how that plays out in practice.

Highly recommend this company! I recently moved and needed to store some items and was unsure where to store as I wanted to make sure it was close by but also very secure. I contacted this company and to spoke to Holly who was so welcoming and helped me decide what size would be better for me by allowing me access to see the units. The level of security in the premises is fantastic with cameras at every corner! I decided in the end to go with a 50ft storage and then dealt with both Helen and Jeremy who explain each step what happens moving forward and made sure that I would get access on the date that suited me. The process I thought was going to be long and added stress for me, however all 3 took that stress away! Thank you again!
