Site security is the set of measures that protect a storage site as a whole: perimeter fencing, gates and controlled entry doors, CCTV, alarms and lighting, and the checks on who comes in. It keeps people who have no business there off the site. The security of your own unit, its lock and alarm, is a separate layer inside it.
At Wigwam
Our FAQ lists CCTV "monitored by professionals" and secure perimeter fencing, and says our sites "have monitored alarms and meet all fire and safety regulations". It adds: "we have access control systems for the external doors and each unit has its own individual alarm and lock".
Our site pages describe these layers, though the details vary by site, so ask about yours:
- perimeter fencing, as our FAQ describes it, and entry through controlled doors, opened by smart entry where your site's page describes it, and by a PIN at Chipping Norton;
- entry only during your site's access hours, normally 6am to 10pm (Cheltenham's published hours conflict, so check them with that site);
- CCTV, which pages such as Marlow's describe as covering the facility;
- an individual alarm on every unit. Our move-in FAQ says that if yours goes off while you're not on site, "our security team will be on hand to investigate".
Our terms also let us ask anyone on site for proof of identity, and refuse entry to someone who can't give it (clause 14). Chipping Norton's page mentions motion-sensitive lighting; if your site's page doesn't describe its lighting and you'll visit after dark, ask us.
Your part
Some of it is down to you. Clause 21 makes you "solely responsible for securing the Unit and ensuring it is locked so as to be secure from unauthorised entry at all times when You are not in the Unit", and says: "We will not be responsible for securing any unlocked Unit." It also asks you, where applicable, to secure the site's external gates and doors behind you.
Site security lowers the risk; it doesn't pay out if something goes wrong. That's the job of contents protection, which our pricing guide says all customers are required to have.
