Moving day has a fixed cost pressure point, landing on you all at once: one date, one van, one bill. We won’t pretend self storage is cheap. What we can do is show you exactly where a saving comes from, with real numbers, so you can judge for yourself whether it applies to your move. It comes down to deciding what happens on the expensive day, rather than letting the removal firm’s clock decide for you.

Quick jump, depending on where you are right now:

  • Your completion date has slipped, or there’s a gap in the chain: skip to when storage saves a chain-gap move.
  • You’ve got a full house and one fixed date: skip to the real numbers.
  • You just want the honest yes or no on whether storage saves money: read on, it’s the next section.

Does self storage actually save you money when you move?

Yes, but conditionally. Self storage saves you money when it shrinks the paid removal job itself: a smaller van, fewer hours, a booking that avoids a premium weekend slot. It does not save you money automatically just because you’ve rented a unit.

That answer depends on one thing: whether splitting your move actually makes the paid part smaller. If it does, you save. If it doesn’t, storage is just an extra cost on top of a move that was always going to be simple.

Plenty of storage providers claim a big saving on moving costs without explaining how it happens. That’s not good enough for a decision this size, so the rest of this page shows the working.

Why a staged move costs less: the mechanism, explained

The saving comes from shrinking the one expensive variable in a house move: the paid removal job. You do this by moving the things you don’t need day-to-day into storage ahead of completion day, on your own schedule, so the job that’s left for moving day itself is smaller, shorter, and easier to book off-peak.

What actually drives a removal quote up is fairly predictable: van size, crew size, chargeable hours, and whether your date lands on a weekend, a month-end, or during school holidays, all of which push prices up because that’s when everyone else wants to move too. Completion dates are rarely chosen freely, so you rarely get to dodge that premium pricing on the day itself.

Splitting the move removes those cost drivers one at a time. Move the furniture and boxes you won’t need in the weeks before completion into storage early, and the final job only has to cover what’s left: the essentials, the fragile items, whatever couldn’t reasonably go earlier. That can mean a smaller van, a shorter job on the clock, and a crew that isn’t working flat out against the last chain call of the day.

There’s a smaller, honest point worth making too: with a staged move, a paid crew only has to handle the heavy or fragile items on the big day, while you handle the rest yourself, in stages, at a pace that suits you.

The real numbers: a staged move vs. a single-day move

The average removals cost for home movers in England is £709 for people buying and selling, according to Reallymoving data reported by Which? in late 2025 (costs and market conditions vary by nation and region, so treat this as a guide rather than a fixed price wherever you’re moving). That’s the number a single, full-house removal is built around. Here’s how it compares to a staged move using storage.

Option A, the direct, single-day move. Everything gets packed, loaded, transported and unloaded in one window, on your completion date, at or around the average figure above, and that figure can climb further if your date lands on a weekend, a month-end, or during school holidays. Because everything happens in one window, there’s less room to absorb the day running late: a delayed key release or a chain hold-up can turn into waiting-time charges on top of the quote.

Option B, the staged move using storage. One to two weeks before completion, with no premium and no fixed deadline, you move the furniture and boxes you don’t need day-to-day into a storage unit, gradually, in a smaller vehicle, or with help booked on a cheaper weekday. On completion day itself, the removal job only covers what’s left, which can mean a smaller van, a shorter job, and fewer chargeable hours than Option A. Anything still in storage afterwards can move on your own schedule too, rather than being squeezed into the completion-day job.

Where this can cost more, not less. If both properties are ready on the same day, access is easy at both ends, and a single straightforward van load would have done the job anyway, adding a storage buffer just adds a cost. We’d rather tell you that plainly than oversell storage as a saving in every scenario. It isn’t.

Option A: single-day move Option B: staged move with storage
Removal job size Full house, one day Non-essentials moved early; smaller final job
Timing pressure Fixed completion date, possible premium slot Bulk move on your own schedule
Storage terms that matter n/a 2-week minimum, 14-day notice, unused days refunded
Where the saving comes from n/a Smaller van, crew and hours, plus avoided premium-slot pricing
Where it can cost more n/a If the staged plan doesn’t actually shrink the paid job

The UK storage terms that decide whether the saving is real

A cheap-looking saving can be wiped out by rigid storage terms: a long minimum stay, no refund for days you didn’t use, or a notice period that doesn’t match a completion date that’s just slipped by two weeks. So the terms themselves are part of the cost argument here, not a footnote to skim past.

Three terms matter for a moving timeline, stated plainly rather than compressed into one soft phrase. The minimum term is two weeks. The notice period is normally 14 days. Unused days on your contract are refunded after that notice period. Each is a separate thing, worth knowing separately, because moving dates slip more often than anyone plans for.

That refund on unused days is the part that specifically protects a mover whose date moves. If your completion date pulls forward, or a sale falls through and picks back up later, you’re not stuck paying for storage time you never used. The saving from a staged move only holds up if the storage part of it doesn’t quietly become its own trap, and that’s exactly what these terms are built to avoid.

What self storage does NOT do in this equation

Storage is the buffer, not the move itself. Wigwam does not arrange, drive, or provide removals of any kind, including man-and-van work or van hire. You’ll still need to book your own removal firm, or handle the final leg yourself.

Here’s what happens at the storage end on move day, since it’s a fair question. A removal firm can collect from, or deliver to, a Wigwam unit in principle. But our sites are unmanned, so there’s no one on hand to receive a delivery or sign a crew in. You, or someone from your side, needs to be there to grant access with your smart entry.

When storage saves a chain-gap move (and when it saves a big-house move)

Two situations account for most of the saving described above.

The first is a chain gap: your sale and purchase dates don’t quite line up, and without a buffer you’d face an emergency second removal or an expensive wait. Moving your belongings into storage once avoids paying for two ad hoc removals when the timing goes sideways, which it often does in a UK chain.

The second is a large, cluttered house where the single-day job is itself the expensive part. Decluttering into storage ahead of a sale can also support a faster, cleaner sale with fewer price reductions along the way, an indirect saving that can outweigh a month or two of storage cost on its own.

Getting the actual numbers for your move

Every figure on this page is a published UK average, not a personal quote. Your real number depends on your own move: the size of your final job, your access at both ends, and the unit size you need. Getting it takes two live quotes: one from a removal firm for the shrunk final job, one from us for the storage buffer. These figures are general guidance, not financial advice, so treat them as a starting point rather than a promise.

If boxes and packing materials come up along the way, our Box Shop sells them online at straightforward prices, worth a look once you know what you’re packing.

The real question to answer before you book anything

The split move, in one line: store what you don’t need yet, on your own schedule, so the day you pay someone else to move you is as small as it can be. It saves money when it shrinks the paid removal job. It doesn’t when your move was always going to be simple and cheap. The way to know which one applies to you is to look at your own completion date, your house size, and your access at both ends, then get real numbers for both sides.

Yes, when it shrinks the paid removal job: a smaller van, fewer hours, or an avoided premium booking slot. It isn’t a saving on its own if your move was already going to be a simple, single load.

No. The minimum term is two weeks, the notice period is normally 14 days, and any unused days on your contract are refunded after that notice period, so a slipping completion date doesn’t leave you paying for time you didn’t use.

Yes, in principle. Our sites are unmanned, though, so you or someone from your side needs to be there to grant access with your smart entry when the crew arrives.
