The box room that was meant to be a nursery “eventually” now has a deadline. That nesting urge, colliding with a home that isn’t quite ready, is familiar to a lot of parents at Wigwam Self Storage Chipping Norton and every town like it.

Just clearing clutter, clothes, toys, the pram, furniture? Store it, no second-guessing. Got a cot mattress or car seat left over from a previous baby? Check the safety section first. Baby due in weeks and you need the room now? Jump to the terms that fit that timeline. Weighing storage against just living with the clutter? Our comparison piece on storage versus keeping the spare room covers that.

The Room Can Go to the Baby Without Your Things Going to Landfill

Self storage lets you clear a nursery-ready room now while keeping everything you’ll want again later. No forced clear-out, no rushed decisions.

What Goes Into the Unit Without a Second Thought

Clothes, prams and furniture: pack and go

Clothes sized up, the pram, later-stage furniture, toys and memorabilia are all simple store-and-reuse wins. Check the pram’s moving parts and tyres before you reuse it, and the same goes for a cot or cot-bed frame, a quick structural check before it comes back into use, nothing more. Just don’t confuse the frame with the mattress that goes on it, that’s a different question entirely. Sort by category before you box anything, clothes together, furniture parts together, toys together, it takes an extra ten minutes now and saves a much longer search later when you’re tired and the nursery deadline is closer than it was.

The One Thing This Article Won’t Dodge

Most baby-stage overflow is a simple store-it win. Two specific items are the exception, and it isn’t about how well they were stored.

Cot Mattresses: Why “It Looks Fine” Isn’t the Test

A stored cot mattress should usually be replaced, not reused, according to both the Lullaby Trust and the NHS.

What the Lullaby Trust and NHS actually say

The Lullaby Trust says it’s best to buy a new mattress for each baby, because some research links a higher risk to second-hand mattresses from outside the family home, though the link isn’t proven. The NHS separately advises trying to buy new rather than second hand where you can.

The one exception, and the checklist that has to pass

If you’re reusing a mattress from your own previous baby, the Lullaby Trust’s own checklist requires it to be firm and flat with no sagging, free of rips, tears, staining or water damage, well-fitting with no gaps in the cot, covered with a well-fitting waterproof cover, and carrying a fire-resistant label. Storage itself doesn’t disqualify a mattress, damp, mould, sagging or a damaged cover does, and those are exactly the things storage conditions can cause if it isn’t kept properly.

Car Seats: The Question Storage Can’t Answer

A stored car seat should usually be replaced, not reused, according to GOV.UK.

Why GOV.UK says don’t reuse a second-hand seat

GOV.UK’s guidance states plainly not to buy second-hand baby car seats, because structural integrity can be compromised by damage that isn’t visible from the outside. Any seat used must also meet approved UK standards.

RoSPA’s narrower exception

RoSPA notes that a seat from a relative or friend whose full history is known, confirmed never to have been in a collision, is a different case from an unknown seat, though caution still applies. The risk with a stored car seat isn’t really about storage conditions, it’s about whatever happened to the seat before it went into storage, which storage can’t reveal or fix. That’s worth sitting with for a second, a seat can look completely fine, no visible cracks, straps intact, and still have hidden structural damage from an impact nobody remembers or knew about, which is exactly why “it looks fine” isn’t the test for either item on this list.

Item Store and reuse later? Why
Baby clothes, blankets Yes, freely No structural safety element, just keep dry and pest-free
Pram or pushchair Yes, generally Check moving parts and tyres before reuse
Cot or cot bed frame Yes, if structurally sound Check it still meets current safety standards
Nursery furniture, toys, books Yes, freely No safety-critical function
Cot mattress Usually no Replace unless it passes every point of the Lullaby Trust checklist
Car seat Usually no Replace unless the full crash-free history is known

This is general safety information, not a substitute for checking your specific product and any recall notices against the Lullaby Trust and GOV.UK directly.

How Our Terms Actually Fit a Nursery Deadline

No long lock-in: the two-week minimum

Our minimum term is two weeks, so you’re not committing to months of storage just to clear a room in time.

Notice, refund and access, stated plainly

You’ll give 14 days’ notice when you’re ready to leave. Separately, any unused paid days are refunded. Access runs 6am to 10pm by smart entry, not office hours, so it fits around feeds, naps and nursery runs. If something like a flat-pack cot is delivered straight to the unit, someone from your side needs to be there, sites are unmanned and staff won’t sign for it.

Do You Need Climate-Controlled Storage for Baby Things?

No. Most baby-stage items, clothes in sealed boxes, plastic or wood furniture, the pram, don’t need it. Our honest claim is clean, dry and secure.

Why the honest answer beats the generic one

A lot of generic storage advice online defaults to recommending climate control for exactly these item categories. It isn’t what most baby-stage items actually need, and it’s not what we offer, so we’d rather say so plainly than imply otherwise.

What Size Unit, and What to Do Next

A single room’s worth of baby-stage overflow is usually a smaller unit, our team can confirm the exact size for your situation when you get a quote.
