There is a version of this we hear all the time. A bench that lives in the hallway now, because there was never quite the right moment to find it a home. A bike leaning against the washing machine. A rack that got half-assembled in the garage a year ago and has simply stayed that way. None of it was a mistake. You bought the kit because you meant to use it, and you probably still do. It is just that one piece of equipment, sitting in the wrong place, has a funny way of throwing off the whole house. The spare room stops being a spare room. The garage stops being a garage. Everyone tiptoes round the same awkward corner. You do not need to sell the kit to fix that. You need somewhere for it to actually live.

If you are short on time, jump to the section that matches you:

Can you actually put gym equipment in a storage unit?

Yes. Weights, benches, exercise bikes and racks are all suitable for a clean, dry, secure self storage unit, and it is one of the most straightforward things people store with us. The two things that actually matter are getting the size right for what you own, and storing heavier items the right way once they are in there, both of which we cover next.

This is not a niche problem you have somehow ended up with on your own. Ofcom’s 2025 Technology Tracker found that 6% of UK households now own smart, connected fitness equipment such as bikes and treadmills that let you train virtually, with ownership skewed toward higher-income and younger to mid-life households. Separately, ONS household spending data on major durables for indoor recreation, a broader category that includes gym-type kit, has stayed resilient right through 2025 and into the first quarter of 2026, rather than fading away as an old lockdown habit. Put simply: people are still buying this kit, and the clutter that follows is a real, ongoing pattern, not something you have got wrong.

What you’ve probably already tried at home (and where it runs out)

If you have already tried a wall-mounted rack, some stacking shelves, or a proper garage reorganise, that was a sensible first move, not a failure. Those solutions genuinely work for a smaller kit: resistance bands, a mat, a couple of kettlebells. Where they run out is scale. A wall bracket has no answer for a full power rack, a folded treadmill and a complete set of weight plates all needing somewhere to go at once. At that point you are not disorganised, you have simply outgrown what your walls can hold, and that is exactly the gap a storage unit is built to fill.

What size unit do you actually need?

Here is the short answer: a compact or rotator kit fits comfortably in one of our smallest units, around 10 to 25 square feet. A mid-size setup, think a rack, a barbell and plate set, or a rowing machine, needs something in the 35 to 50 square foot range. A full spare-room-gym combination, rack plus bench plus plates plus a cardio machine, needs around 75 to 100 square feet, similar to the space we’d suggest for a furnished three-bed house move.

The table below is built from typical, real-world equipment dimensions so you can match your own kit against it. Treat the figures as a helpful guide rather than an exact fit for your specific items, and do get in touch if you want a second opinion on your list.

Kit tier Typical items Approx. unit size Example use case
Compact / rotator Adjustable dumbbells and stand, resistance bands, yoga mat, foam roller, folding weight bench, kettlebells 10 to 25 sq ft A New Year buy that has quietly taken over a corner of the spare room
Mid-size Power or squat rack, Olympic barbell and plates, rowing machine, spin bike 35 to 50 sq ft A garage setup that is now competing with the car for space
Full spare-room gym Rack, bench, plates and a cardio machine together 75 to 100 sq ft A house move where the gym has to come too, or a full room reclaim

Compact / rotator kit

This is the easiest tier to store and usually the quickest win. Dumbbells, bands and a folding bench take up very little floor space once they are out of your hallway, and a small unit gives them a proper home instead of a corner of the spare room.

Mid-size kit

Racks, barbells and rowing machines are bulkier and heavier, which is where a mid-size unit earns its keep. Many rowing machines and spin bikes fold or stand upright, so they take up less room than you would expect once they are packed properly.

Full spare-room-gym setup

If you are storing a complete setup, whether that is because you are moving house or reclaiming a room in full, budget for a unit closer to a small house move than a single item. It gives everything room to sit properly rather than being wedged in.

Once you can picture the unit that fits your kit, it is worth seeing what that size costs near you and getting a quote so you know exactly where you stand.

Storing plates, racks and bikes safely (without a spec sheet)

Is it safe to store weight plates and racks in a storage unit? Yes, and this is one of the questions we get asked most. Concrete ground-floor units, which is what you will find at Wigwam, comfortably take normal household gym loads. We do not publish a numeric floor-loading figure, because it genuinely depends on how you spread the weight, so the honest answer is qualitative rather than a spec sheet: the floor loading at our units is typically fine for household gym equipment including weight plates and racks, but if you have an unusually heavy single item, check with the team when you book.

Spread the load, don’t stack it

Keep plates and other heavy items on the floor, spread out rather than piled into one corner or stacked high on shelving. It is the same principle we recommend for any heavy item in a storage unit, and it matters more, not less, with dense kit like weight plates.

Leave a clear aisle

Leave a clear path down the middle of the unit so you can pull out what you need for a session without unpacking everything else first. A gym unit you cannot actually get into defeats the point of having one.

Why clean, dry and secure matters here

Metal equipment can rust and upholstered or foam kit can pick up mould if it sits somewhere damp, which is exactly the risk with a garden shed or an unheated garage. Our units are clean, dry and secure, which protects both the metal and the padded parts of your kit properly.

Getting to your kit outside the 9-to-5

If you train before work or after it, access runs 6am to 10pm, seven days a week, through smart entry, so you are not boxed into office hours to get to your equipment. Most of our sites are unmanned, which suits solo equipment retrieval fine. If you ever need a courier or a friend to help move something heavy like a rack, just make sure someone from your side is there to meet them, since there is no staff on hand to assist.

The garage-reclaiming problem

If your garage has become a standoff between the car, the bike, the tools and a rack that never quite made it back into the house, moving the gym kit into a unit settles it. The garage goes back to doing its actual job, whether that is parking the car, running a workshop, or just holding the seasonal stuff without a fight over floor space. A mid-size unit, the same tier covered above, is usually the right call here.

Moving house without giving up the kit

Downsizing does not have to mean selling the home gym. A unit can hold your equipment through the move itself and for as long afterwards as you need, whether that is a few months until the new place has room, or indefinitely if it never quite does. If your gym kit is part of a bigger house-move sizing question, our guide on what size storage unit fits a three-bed house move is worth a look. For what it will actually cost, the pricing guide covers that in full, so we will not repeat the figures here.

Off-season and rotated kit

A storage unit works just as well as a seasonal swap space as it does for permanent storage. If you use a rowing machine through winter and a bike through summer, or you swap kit in and out as your training goals shift, a unit lets you keep both without either one living in your way year-round.

Seasonal rotation

Store the out-of-season piece, bring in the one you are using, and swap again when the season turns. It is a small habit that keeps your home clear without asking you to choose between two pieces of kit you actually want to keep.

Finding your nearest Wigwam

Wigwam runs 15 market-town self storage sites across the country, so there is a good chance one of them is close to home. You can find your nearest site here and get a quote in a few minutes. The room is free again, and the kit finally has a place of its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Many treadmills fold down, though they are still long and heavy, so it is worth having a second pair of hands when you move one in. Exercise bikes take up relatively little floor space and store easily.

It depends on what you own. A compact kit, dumbbells, bands, a folding bench, fits a small unit of around 10 to 25 square feet. A mid-size setup with a rack or rowing machine needs roughly 35 to 50 square feet, and a full spare-room-gym combination needs around 75 to 100 square feet. No, Wigwam rents storage units, we do not sell storage furniture or lockers. If you are after a unit to store gym kit in, that is exactly what we do, and the sizing guide above will point you to the right one.
