If the house group chat has just gone “wait, when do we actually have to be out,” you’re exactly on schedule, not behind. Every June a good chunk of Lincoln’s student houses have the same conversation at the same time, usually a little later than anyone would like. Here’s the straight answer to when you actually have to leave, and a fair way to split one storage unit with your flatmates so it doesn’t turn into a row.

Work out which of these is you, then jump straight there:

  • Moving out on your own, or driving everything home in one car: skip to “Wigwam Self Storage Lincoln, the Facility” below.
  • Splitting one unit with flatmates: skip to “The Fair-Share Split” below.
  • Don’t know your move-out date yet: skip to “Find Your Actual Date” below.

There Is No Single “June Move-Out Day”

Whatever the halls WhatsApp group has decided, Lincoln students don’t all leave on the same date. The fixed part is the time: 10am, on the date written into your own Accommodation Agreement, not a shared calendar date the whole building works to.

Why two flatmates who moved in together can move out on different days

Two people can start their tenancy on exactly the same day in September and still get different checkout dates the following summer, because University of Lincoln contracts run in different lengths. Some are 40 weeks, some 44, some 46, some 51. Your contract length sets your end date. Your housemate’s tenancy doesn’t, last year’s cohort doesn’t, and the group chat rumour mill definitely doesn’t.

The 10am rule, and where it comes from

We didn’t guess this one. The University of Lincoln’s own accommodation site states it plainly: you must vacate your accommodation and return your keys by 10am on the tenancy end date stated in your Accommodation Agreement. That’s the rule in the University’s own words, checked directly rather than passed down third-hand.

Find Your Actual Date

There’s no public “23 June” style date to look up in place of your own, because it doesn’t exist. Your real date lives in one of two places: the Accommodation Agreement you signed, or the University’s own accommodation portal.

Where to check your Accommodation Agreement

Open the document you signed when you accepted your room, or log into the University’s accommodation portal if you can’t find the paperwork. That’s the only place your date is written down. Guessing from what a flatmate has been told wastes time you don’t have this close to exams.

Don’t confuse this with the 1 August accommodation-guarantee deadline

You may also see a 1 August date somewhere on the university’s accommodation pages. That’s a different deadline entirely: it’s the date for first-year applicants to apply for next year’s accommodation guarantee, not a move-out date. Keep the two apart in your head. One lands at the start of the cycle, the other at the end, and they answer different questions.

University Halls vs Private Student Housing

The 10am rule above applies specifically to University-managed accommodation: Cygnet Wharf, Valentine Court, St Marks Student Village, The Gateway, and 179 High Street. In a private let, a different rule applies to you.

If you’re in University-managed halls

The 10am, contract-end-date rule is your rule. It comes straight from your Accommodation Agreement, and it works the same way regardless of which of the named halls you’re in.

If you’re in a private student house

Your landlord’s own tenancy terms decide your move-out date and time, not the University’s accommodation policy. Check your tenancy agreement, or ask your landlord directly, rather than assuming the University’s 10am rule covers you by default. Usually it won’t.

The Flatmate-Share Decision

Not everyone storing something needs to be part of a shared unit. If you’re driving straight home with a full boot and nothing left over, the split may not involve you at all. For everyone else, one shared unit saves several people each booking, paying for, and managing their own separate space for a summer’s worth of boxes.

Who needs to be in the split

Sort this out first: who in the house is actually storing things in Lincoln over summer, rather than taking it home? That’s your real group, and it might be smaller than the whole house.

What “sharing by share” means

Once you know who’s in, the fair way to divide a shared unit is by share, not by whoever happens to have the loudest voice in the group chat. Share of the physical space, and share of the admin that comes with running a booking. That’s what the table below is built to sort out.

The Fair-Share Split

This is the part worth forwarding to a parent exactly as it stands. It’s a plan, laid out clearly enough that anyone reading it can see the space and the responsibility have been divided sensibly. No pound signs anywhere: that conversation happens directly between whoever’s storing and Wigwam when you actually book, not here.

Flatmates sharing ONE unit Each person’s share of the unit Each person’s share of the admin
Just you, alone 100%, the whole unit and the whole task is yours 100%, you own the booking and the keys
You + 1 flatmate 50% each Split into two jobs: one books, one confirms; both named on the paperwork if the facility allows it
You + 2 flatmates (3 total) Roughly a third each Rotate who leads: one person books and manages access, the other two commit to a fixed collection date
You + 3 flatmates (4 total) Roughly a quarter each Nominate one lead booker; the other three agree and confirm in writing, a group chat message is enough

How to use the table

Count how many of you are genuinely storing together, find your row, and agree who the lead booker is before anyone touches a box. The lead books the unit and manages access; everyone else confirms the split in writing, even if that writing is just a message in the house group chat. That one step removes almost every argument that follows.

What happens if you skip this

The houses that don’t agree a split in advance are the ones arguing about it at quarter to ten on move-out morning, with a van outside and nobody quite sure who’s in charge. It isn’t a scare story. It’s just what happens when four people try to make a decision under time pressure that they could have made a week earlier over a cup of tea.

Once you know your split, check unit sizes and availability at Wigwam Self Storage Lincoln, or get your quote at Wigwam.

Wigwam Self Storage Lincoln, the Facility

Wigwam Self Storage Lincoln sits on Greetwell Road, and a fair few of the city’s students already use it every summer, not just for the June exodus but for the gap between terms generally.

Unit sizes for a shared kitchen, a sofa and boxes

There’s a real range on offer, from small 10 sq ft lockers right up to 300 sq ft and beyond, across more than twelve sizes in between. Whether it’s one person’s boxes or a whole shared kitchen, a sofa, and everyone’s belongings from the Fair-Share table above, there’s a size that fits without you paying for space you don’t need.

Access hours and how smart entry works

The site is open for access from 6am to 10pm, seven days a week, using smart entry rather than a member of staff on the gate. That matters for one reason worth being clear about: the site is unmanned, so if someone who isn’t on the account is dropping off or collecting on a flatmate’s behalf, someone from the account holder’s own side needs to be there with them. A flatmate who isn’t named on the booking can’t simply be let in by another flatmate who also isn’t on the account.

What Wigwam Staff Can (and Can’t) Help With

Worth knowing before you call, so you ask the right people the right question.

For sizing, availability and booking

The Wigwam team can talk you through unit sizes, check what’s available, and get a booking set up. That’s their job, and they’re good at it.

For anything about your tenancy or contract

They can’t confirm your University checkout date, settle a disagreement between flatmates about who owes who what, or give you legal or insurance advice. For any of that, your Accommodation Agreement, your landlord, or the University’s own accommodation team is the right place to go. Wigwam isn’t refusing to help here, it’s simply that those questions were never theirs to answer.

Hand This to Your Parents

What to send them

If a parent has been quietly checking in, forward them this page along with your completed Fair-Share Split row. It reads like the receipt for a plan, not a bill: who’s storing what, who’s booking it, and when it’s happening. That’s the version of “I’ve got this handled” that actually lands, because it’s specific rather than a vague reassurance down the phone.

Your next step

Work out your real date from your Accommodation Agreement, agree your split with whoever you’re storing with, and get sizes and a quote sorted at Wigwam Self Storage Lincoln. Storing something for the summer rather than the whole year? The student storage page covers that gap too. Either way, your quote is one visit away at quote.wigwamstorage.co.uk.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re in University-managed accommodation, you need to vacate and return your keys by 10am on the tenancy end date stated in your own Accommodation Agreement, not a date shared across the whole building.

No. University of Lincoln contracts run for different lengths, 40, 44, 46 or 51 weeks, so two flatmates who moved in on the same day can still have different move-out dates the following summer. Check your own Accommodation Agreement for your date.

Yes, and it’s often the simpler option for a shared house. Work out who’s genuinely storing together, agree a fair split of the space and the admin using something like the Fair-Share Split above, and nominate one lead booker to keep things straightforward.

The University’s 10am rule applies to University-managed halls only. In a private let, your landlord’s own tenancy agreement sets your move-out date and time, so check that instead.
