A void period is the time a rented property stands empty between one tenancy ending and the next one starting, so the landlord gets no rent for those weeks.
The running costs carry on: GOV.UK says "You'll usually have to pay Council Tax on an empty home, but your council can decide to give you a discount". It adds: "If you’re making major home improvements to your property and cannot live in it, you can ask to have it removed (deleted) from the Council Tax list." The empty weeks are also when repairs, redecorating or a change to an unfurnished let get done, and furniture left in the rooms gets in the way of the trades and the viewings. A storage unit clears the rooms for the gap. If you mean the gap between leaving one home and moving into the next, that is bridging storage.
Storing furniture during a void period at Wigwam
You don't need to know the re-let date when you book. The minimum stay is two weeks. You then give written notice, normally 14 days (see notice period). That notice runs alongside the two-week minimum rather than on top of it: our spare-room guide says "You can give notice during the minimum period if you already know your plans." When you move out, our move-out FAQ says we refund "any unused days on your contract after the notice period". When you book, you pay a refundable deposit of two weeks' rent at your unit's standard weekly rate, refunded within 21 days of your agreement ending (clause 4).
Our room-by-room size guide puts a one-bed flat at around 50 sq ft. On our September 2026 price lists, the median (middle value) of the listed prices is about £78 per four weeks for 25 sq ft and about £143 for 50 sq ft, before any introductory offer; the listed prices for 50 sq ft run from £82 to £304 depending on the site and floor. Contents cover is required on top: our FAQ says "All customers require contents protection for their stored goods", which can be our contents protection or your own insurance. Nothing is added at checkout: the total in your quote is what you pay, and our prices include VAT. Your online quote shows it.
Access hours vary by site; Cheltenham's page, for example, lists both 8am to 6pm on weekdays (10am to 4pm at weekends and bank holidays) and 6am to 10pm, so confirm your hours when you book. To find your nearest site, see our storage locations. If a removals firm or contractor is loading your unit, our landlord's void-period guide says "someone from your own side needs to be present".
Clearing a former tenant's things
If the furniture is a former tenant's rather than yours, our guide to storing a tenant's abandoned belongings explains that under the Torts (Interference with Goods) Act 1977 "those belongings are still the tenant's property". Take legal advice before you sell or dispose of anything.
