Our Box Shop sells four cardboard boxes, all double-walled: Medium (457 x 330 x 330mm), Large (450 x 450 x 500mm), Extra Large (450 x 450 x 750mm, called "Tall" inside the kits) and a Wardrobe Box with a metal hanging rail (508 x 457 x 1016mm). On 23 September 2026 they were £3.50, £4.50, £5.25 and £9.99 each, and the first three also come in packs of ten. Put heavy things such as books in the Medium, bulky light things such as bedding in the Large, tall or awkward things in the Extra Large, and clothes on hangers in the Wardrobe Box. There's no smaller box than the Medium.

The Wardrobe Box's product page doesn't say how many garments the rail holds, and there's no multipack, so if you need several, call us on 0800 2545585.
In a pack of ten, each box works out at £2.50 (Medium), £3.50 (Large) or £4.50 (Extra Large), a saving of 75p to £1 a box on the single price. For a sense of size, the Medium holds about 50 litres, the Large about 101, the Extra Large about 152 and the Wardrobe Box about 236.
Which size for what
Books and heavy things: the Medium. Our bedroom packing guide puts it simply: "Books are heavier than they look. Pack them in smaller boxes so you can lift them without throwing your back out." The same goes for kitchenware, tins, tools and paperwork. The product pages don't give a weight rating for any box, so the test is whether one person can lift it comfortably when it's full (ask us if you need a rating). Our packing tips add "Reinforce the bottom with tape for heavier items", and our books guide says to pack them so "they are never on their spine, the heaviest ones are at the bottom, and you don't overfill the boxes". A box also needs to be full to stack well (see below), so put books in the bottom of a Medium, heaviest first, and top it up with light things such as towels or cushions: full, but still liftable.
Light, bulky things: the Large. Bedding, towels, cushions and folded clothes fill a big box without making it heavy. Our bedroom guide says of bedding and linen: "These bulky items work well in larger boxes."
Tall and awkward things: the Extra Large. At 750mm high it takes lamps, tall ornaments and folded linen.
Clothes on hangers: the Wardrobe Box. Hang coats, suits and dresses straight onto its rail and they travel and store without folding. The Wardrobe Box is listed at 508 x 457 x 1016mm with a built-in hanging rail. We don't publish the drop from the rail to the base, and it will be less than the box's height, so full-length coats and dresses may fold at the bottom. Our bedroom guide says to "Use wardrobe boxes for dresses, suits, and items that need to hang." For keeping clothes fresh over a long stay, see how to stop clothes going musty.
Fragile things. Any size works if the item is wrapped and the box is full. Our house-move packing guide notes that "A half-filled box compresses under weight", so fill gaps with paper or soft things. Wrap each fragile piece and label the box. If they're going into storage, our terms say goods are stored "at Your sole risk and responsibility", and we exclude liability for loss or damage "except where this results from Our negligence or breach of contract, in which case Our liability will be limited to the sum of £100 in total" (clause 30). They also say: "Subject to Clause 48 if applicable, We do not insure the Goods and it is a condition of this Agreement that the Goods remain adequately insured by You at all times for their Replacement Value (as set out on the Cover Sheet) while they are in storage" (clause 31).
For stacking in a unit. The Large and Extra Large share a 450 x 450mm base, so they sit squarely on each other; the Medium is a different shape. Our house-move guide warns that "mixing small, medium and large boxes leads to unstable piles", so group boxes by size. How to pack boxes so they stack safely covers the rest.
The moving kits
| Kit | Boxes | Contents, as listed | Price | Same contents bought separately (23 September 2026 prices) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Student Moving Kit | 10 | 5 Medium and 5 Large boxes, 1 roll of 50mm x 66m packing tape, 1 black marker pen | £35.00 (was £43.99) | £43.98 (single boxes, tape and pen) |
| Standard Moving Kit | 25 | 10 Medium, 10 Large and 5 Tall boxes, tape, marker pen, 750mm x 25m bubble wrap | £99.99 (was £126.48) | £105.22 (packs of ten, 5 single Extra Large, tape, pen, bubble wrap) |
| Large Moving Kit | 40 | 15 Medium, 15 Large and 10 Tall boxes, tape, marker pen, 750mm x 25m bubble wrap | £195.00 (was £250.97) | £163.97 (packs of ten plus single boxes, tape, pen, bubble wrap) |
On those prices, the Student and Standard kits cost less than their contents bought separately, and the Large kit cost more. A kit only saves money if you'd use everything in it: a pack of ten Medium, a pack of ten Large, tape and a pen came to £63.98 for 20 boxes, against £70.00 for two Student kits.
The Student kit's summary line mentions bubble wrap, but its contents list doesn't include any, so if you need it, add a roll or ask us first. Our guide to how many boxes you'll need matches each kit to a home size, from 10 to 20 boxes for a room or student halls up to "more than 80" for a four-bed.
Sellers and stock
If you sell clothes, hang the pieces that should hang in Wardrobe Boxes and keep small stock and accessories in Mediums, which are easier to lift and sort. Our guide for clothing traders says some fabrics, "such as wool, should be loosely folded with paper wrapping in a heavy-duty box to prevent stretching", and suggests "acid-free colourless paper to avoid transferring colour onto the clothing". Its full advice is in storage tips for clothing traders and eCommerce businesses. The product pages don't say whether a VAT receipt is issued; call us on 0800 2545585 to ask.
Already storing with us, or not sure where to buy

VAT and what to ask
The product pages show one price per item and don't say whether it includes VAT, so check the total in your basket before you pay; the shop pages don't show a delivery charge either, so that total is where you'll see it.
