Wardrobe box

A wardrobe box is a tall cardboard box with a hanging rail inside, so clothes go from the wardrobe into the box on their hangers and come out again without being folded. It's made for coats, suits, dresses and shirts that crease or lose their shape when packed flat.

At Wigwam

Our Box Shop sells one, the Wardrobe Box: 508 x 457 x 1016mm, with a "Built-in metal hanging rail", a "Rigid double-walled design" and an "Easy front-opening flap". It was £9.99 as listed in September 2026 (check your basket for VAT and delivery before you pay). It isn't in any of our moving kits, so add it separately. The shop offers "fast delivery direct to your door" but doesn't state a delivery charge. Our Chipping Norton and Leatherhead pages list an "On-site packaging store" and our Alton page "a box shop with packaging supplies", so ring the site to check it has the Wardrobe Box, or ask on 0800 2545585.

Will my longest coat fit?

The Wardrobe Box is listed at 508 x 457 x 1016mm with a built-in hanging rail. We don't publish the drop from the rail to the base, and it will be less than the box's height, so full-length coats and dresses may fold at the bottom. The shop doesn't give the rail's length or how many garments it holds either. The product page calls the 1016mm height "ideal for long garments such as coats and dresses"; to judge your own, hang your longest garment and measure from the top of the hook to the hem.

Clothes in storage

Everything goes in clean and bone dry. Keep the box off the floor and away from the walls of the unit. Our units aren't climate-controlled: they're clean, dry and secure, but the temperature and humidity inside aren't regulated. Don't crowd the rail: leave room for air to move between garments. For folded clothes on a stay longer than a few weeks, use a rigid lidded container with the lid on but not sealed, and only when everything is bone dry. Wedding dresses and vintage pieces are worth a breathable garment bag each; store heavy, beaded or fragile pieces flat and supported rather than on a hanger.

Moving house? Pack the wardrobe straight onto the rail on moving day and the clothes can stay in the box in your unit, as long as they went in clean and bone dry.
Storing winter coats for a season? Use the box for what hangs and a lidded container for what folds.
