If you’re mid-move or mid-renovation right now, holding something you don’t want to gamble on, you’ve probably seen the “climate controlled” upgrade button and wondered whether skipping it is sensible or reckless. It’s a fair question to feel uneasy about. We don’t sell climate control at Wigwam, so we’ve got no reason to talk you into it and no reason to talk you out of it either. That means what follows is just what’s actually true, which is rarer online on this topic than it should be.

If you’re storing flat-pack furniture, boxed clothes, tools or books for weeks or months: standard storage is fine, skip straight to the packing tips below.
If you’re storing solid wood, antique or upholstered furniture for months: standard storage is fine too, with a bit of care. See the table below.
If you’re storing fine art, instruments, archival documents or wine for months or years: this is the genuine climate-control case. See the note further down.
If anything you’re storing is already damp, or was packed away wet: dry it first. No storage type fixes damp that’s already there.

What climate-controlled storage actually is

Climate-controlled storage keeps a unit at a steady temperature, usually somewhere between about 14°C and 22°C, and manages humidity so it doesn’t spike or drop with the weather outside. It’s built to protect things that react badly to swings in heat, cold or moisture, rather than to protect against damp getting in at all. Worth flagging: search results for this exact question are dominated by American storage operators, whose climate and building stock are different enough from ours that a lot of the advice you’ll find doesn’t quite fit a UK unit in a UK winter.

Do you actually need it?

For the large majority of what people store in the UK, no. Standard clean, dry and secure storage covers flat-pack furniture, boxed belongings, tools, books and most household goods without any trouble. Climate control is a real product, but it’s a narrow one, built for a small category of genuinely sensitive items over long periods.

What you’re storing Duration Standard storage OK? What actually protects it
Flat-pack/modern furniture, white goods, tools, garden kit Any Fine Nothing extra needed
Boxed clothes, textiles (packed properly) Weeks-months Fine Vacuum bags or breathable cotton, not bin bags
Books, paper, photos, documents Weeks-months Fine Off the floor, in sealed plastic crates, away from unit walls
Solid wood or antique furniture, veneer, upholstery Months Fine with care Breathable cover (not plastic sheeting), off the floor on pallets/boards, a moisture absorber in the unit
Musical instruments, fine art, archival documents, wine Months-years Marginal This is the genuine climate-control case, worth sourcing a specialist facility
Anything already damp, or stored wet Any No, dry it first Neither standard nor climate-controlled storage will fix pre-existing damp

Whichever row you’re in, the pattern holds: it’s rarely the product tier that decides the outcome. It’s how the item goes in.

Why packing beats the product

Here’s an illustration of that, not a customer story, just how the physics plays out. Picture two identical oak wardrobes going into standard storage for the same renovation project. Wardrobe A gets wrapped tight in plastic sheeting and sits straight on the concrete floor, so moisture gets trapped against the wood, condenses, and the base swells. Wardrobe B gets a breathable cover, sits raised on pallets, with a moisture absorber nearby, and comes out exactly as it went in. Same unit, same lack of climate control, opposite outcome. The variable was the packing, not the product.

The insurance fact nobody else mentions

Even if you do pay extra for climate control, most UK self-storage contents insurance still won’t cover damp, mould or mildew, or anything classed as atmospheric or climatic damage, regardless of which storage tier you chose. Policies like Wigwam’s RSA-backed cover work this way: cover is opt-in or you can prove your own insurance meets the requirement, claims are settled New-for-Old, there’s a £50 excess, and underinsurance is settled proportionally. Theft claims need evidence of forced entry, and climatic damage sits outside what the policy pays for either way. That last point matters more than it first sounds: insurance was never going to rescue badly packed goods, climate-controlled or not. Correct packing is what actually protects the item. No competitor page answering “do I need climate-controlled storage” mentions this, which is a shame, because it’s the part of the decision that actually changes the answer.

When to actually skip standard storage

Some items genuinely do need proper climate control: fine art, musical instruments, archival documents and wine stored over months or years are the real exceptions. For these, we’ll say it plainly rather than pretend otherwise: standard storage, or Wigwam generally, isn’t the right fit. This is general guidance, not professional advice; if what you’re storing is irreplaceable or high-value, it’s worth finding a specialist climate-controlled facility or talking to a conservator before you decide.

What this means for your Wigwam storage

If you landed in the “standard storage is fine” majority above, that’s exactly what Wigwam is built for: individually alarmed units, smart entry, and unlimited access from 6am to 10pm, seven days a week.

Find your nearest Wigwam

If you’re mid-renovation on a period property, Wigwam Self Storage Bath sees a fair bit of exactly this kind of storage, wood and upholstered furniture going in for a few months while work happens around it. If you’re closer to the Midlands, Wigwam Self Storage Burton on Trent covers similar ground. You can find the one nearest you on the full locations page.

Notice, deposit and refund, in plain terms

Three separate things, not one: you’ll need to give notice before ending your storage, your deposit is refunded after that notice period completes, and any unused paid days are refunded separately on top. Full detail sits on our self-storage insurance page alongside the cover terms above.

Every storage company selling climate control has a reason to tell you that you need it. We don’t sell it, so we’ve got no reason to tell you anything except what’s true, which, on this particular question, makes us the one answer on the internet you can actually take at face value.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Wigwam’s standard is clean, dry and secure storage, alarmed and smart-entry, across all locations. If your item falls into the genuine climate-control category above, a specialist facility is the right recommendation.

Not if it’s packed correctly. Use a breathable cover rather than plastic sheeting, raise it off the floor, and add a moisture absorber in the unit if you’re storing solid wood or upholstery for more than a few weeks.

No. Contents insurance on RSA-backed policies, the type most UK self-storage operators including Wigwam use, excludes atmospheric or climatic damage and damp, mould or mildew, whether or not you paid for climate control.

Fine art, musical instruments, archival documents and wine stored over months or years. For these, a specialist climate-controlled facility or a conservator is the right call, not standard self storage.
