No, not for your use. Our terms don't allow anything to be connected to power in a unit unless we've agreed it, so plan on nothing in the unit running or charging. Some storage companies do offer powered units on request. If you need power to work or charge things, that's the question to ask before you book.
Why units don't have power
Our storage agreement says you mustn't "connect or provide any utilities or services to the Unit unless authorised by Us". It also rules out portable heaters at any time. Our reason for both is simple: a small, closed space full of cardboard, fabric and furniture is the wrong place for anything that heats up, sparks or charges, with nobody there to notice.
It also follows from what a unit is for. Our terms say units are for storage only, not an office, a home or a workshop. So nothing inside should need power.
What about lighting?
Whether there's a light inside your unit depends on the site, so ask when you book. If you'd like extra light inside your unit, our Box Shop sells a battery-powered LED light. It's handy for finding things at the back of a deep unit without needing a socket.
What people usually want power for, and what to do instead
| You want to… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Keep a fridge or freezer running | Store it switched off, defrosted, clean and dry, with the door open. See storing a fridge or freezer. |
| Charge an e-bike or e-scooter | Charge the battery at home. A removable battery over 160Wh has to stay at home anyway. See storing e-bikes and lithium batteries. |
| Charge cordless tool batteries | Charge them at home. You can store spare lithium-ion packs rated 160Wh or less in the unit; the rating is printed on the pack. Power banks and portable chargers can't be stored. |
| Run a dehumidifier | Keep moisture out from the start instead. Pack things clean and dry and off the floor; see stopping clothes going musty. |
| Use power tools or work on something | Units are storage only, not workshops. Our guide on running a business from a storage unit explains what is and isn't allowed. |
| Keep electronics safe | Unplugged, dry and packed properly; see storing electronics safely. |
If you really need power
Some storage operators offer powered and lit units, usually on request. Attic Storage, for example, invites customers to mention it so they can be given a unit that has power. If power is essential to what you're planning, ask any storage company to confirm it in writing before you book.
With us, plan on an unpowered unit. Our terms allow a connection only where we've authorised it, and power isn't something we offer with a unit, so never connect anything yourself.
