Is there step-free access for wheelchair users?

Yes, at ground level. We've confirmed step-free access at ground level to our ground-floor units, so a ground-floor unit is the surest choice if you use a wheelchair. Upper floors vary by site, so check the table below for yours before you choose an upper-floor unit (Bromsgrove's lift is a goods lift, and we don't yet publish which of the other lifts carry passengers). Tell us you need step-free access when you book, and we'll look for a ground-floor unit in the size you need.

Site by site

The floors and sizes below come from our price list of September 2026. Which units are free on the day is something we confirm when you book.

Where the table says "Ask us", the ground-level step-free access above still applies; it's only the floor layout that we haven't published yet.

Three things in that table are easy to miss.

  • Small ground-floor units aren't everywhere. At Alton and March the ground floor starts at 50 sq ft; the smaller sizes are upstairs. At Dorking the ground floor has 20, 25 and 30 sq ft units and then jumps to 100 sq ft. If you need a small unit on the level, ask which of our nearby sites has one.
  • A lift isn't always one you can ride in. We don't yet publish lift sizes, weight limits or whether a lift is for goods only. If you'd travel in the lift in a wheelchair, ask before you choose an upper-floor unit.
  • Chipping Norton's mezzanine is labelled "No lift" on our price list. Treat it as stairs-only unless we confirm otherwise for your booking.

Drive-up units and containers

Most of our units are rooms inside our buildings. We also have a limited number of drive-up units and outdoor containers at Chipping Norton, Shipston-on-Stour and Warminster. With these you park next to the unit and load straight in, with no lifts or corridors in between, and you lock up with your own padlock. Ask us which are free, and whether there's a lip or step at the door, before you book one for level access.

Getting in and moving your things

Our general position is that you can park free while you unload, in the customer car park attached to the site. The exception to check is Cheltenham, which is in the town centre: ask us about parking there before you travel.

Where your site's page describes smart entry, gates, doors and units open from your phone. If a phone doesn't suit you, ask for a fob when you book. Chipping Norton works differently: you use a PIN code, and your unit takes your own padlock, so think about whether a padlock is manageable for you, or for whoever will visit.

If you need help carrying, we can put you in touch with local removals and man-and-van firms. You can also bring someone to help. Our terms say only you "or Your Agents may access the Unit", so a family member, carer or friend can come with you or go on your behalf; you're responsible for what they do on site.

If you're arranging storage for a parent or relative, book the unit with their needs in mind, not your own. A first-floor unit you'd carry boxes to easily could be out of their reach on a solo visit.

Questions to ask before you book

If your site's page doesn't give these details, ask us on the phone:

  1. Is the route from the car park to my unit level, and how wide are the doors and corridors?
  2. Is there a disabled parking bay?
  3. If my unit is upstairs, does the lift carry passengers, and will my wheelchair fit?
  4. How long do the automatic doors stay open?
  5. Is there an accessible toilet? (See are there toilets at Wigwam sites?)
  6. For a drive-up unit or container: is there a step or lip at the door?
  7. If you walk with a frame or stick: how far is it from the parking to my unit, are the doors automatic or heavy to push, and is there somewhere to sit down?

Our office is open Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm (times can vary by site), and you're welcome to visit reception and see a unit before you book.

If a site doesn't suit you

Tell us, and we'll look at what we can do. That might be a ground-floor unit instead of an upstairs one, or one closer to the entrance. At Leatherhead, where the first floor has no lift, we've done exactly that for a customer: found them a ground-floor unit instead.

The Equality Act 2010 requires service providers like us to take reasonable steps where a physical feature, such as a flight of stairs, puts a disabled customer at a substantial disadvantage, and it doesn't allow us to charge you for making those adjustments. If a disabled relative, carer or friend will be visiting for you, ask us what we can arrange for them too. Telling us what you need at the start is the quickest way to get it right.

To find a step-free unit at your nearest site, call us on 0800 2545585 and say you need ground-floor or step-free access, or get a price online and mention it when we confirm your booking.
