Ground-floor unit

A ground-floor unit is a storage unit on the street-level floor of a storage building, so you can wheel or carry things in without using stairs or a lift. It is still an indoor unit, which is what separates it from a drive-up unit, where you park at the unit door itself.

Our September 2026 price lists show ground-floor units at the sites below, and the biggest units are normally on the ground floor; check your site's price list, and if your site isn't below, ask us. Where the smallest sizes sit varies:

  • At Alton and March, ground-floor units start at 50 sq ft, so anything smaller is upstairs.
  • At Dorking, Reading and Shipston-on-Stour they start at 20 sq ft, at Leatherhead and Lincoln at 16 sq ft, and at Tewkesbury at 15 sq ft.
  • At Bath, Bromsgrove, Chipping Norton and Marlow you can have 10 sq ft on the ground floor, and at Burton-on-Trent 5 sq ft.

The ground floor usually costs more for the same size. Where a site lists the same size on both floors, the upstairs unit is typically around 12% cheaper, while Alton, March and Shipston-on-Stour charge the same on both floors. At Leatherhead, for example, 100 sq ft is £524 per four weeks on the ground floor and £416 on the first floor, which our price list marks as having no lift.

When it's worth paying for

Choose the ground floor for heavy or awkward things (a piano, a washing machine, a solid oak wardrobe), for a big one-day house move where every trip counts, or if anyone loading has trouble with stairs. For light boxes you'll rarely visit, an upper floor can save money. Our price lists don't say which sites have step-free routes from the car park to the ground floor, so if that matters, ask when you book.
