An indoor unit is a storage room inside a building, reached through the building's own entrance and corridors rather than straight from the car park. The building keeps the weather off the unit door, and the building's entrance adds a layer of access control before anyone reaches your unit.
At Wigwam
Most of our units are indoor units: "purpose built storage rooms inside our warehouse", in the words of our FAQ. Our FAQ names a limited selection of drive-up units and external shipping containers at Chipping Norton, Shipston-on-Stour and Warminster as the alternative.
Our FAQ says "we have access control systems for the external doors and each unit has its own individual alarm and lock", and access is normally 6am to 10pm, seven days a week (check your site's page for its hours). Where your site's September 2026 price list shows units on more than one floor, the same size often costs less upstairs than on the ground floor. See upper-floor unit for the figures and what to ask about lifts.
Indoor is not the same as climate-controlled
An indoor unit is sheltered, but the building is not necessarily heated or kept at a set humidity. Our terms (clause 26) make you responsible for checking that a unit suits what you store, advise you to inspect it before storing and from time to time afterwards, and say we make no promise that any unit suits particular goods. If something you own needs a steady temperature, such as a piano, artwork or old photographs, ask us about the conditions at your site before you book, and pack it with that in mind.
The trade-off against a drive-up unit is carrying distance: indoors, your things go from the vehicle through a door and along a corridor, sometimes to a lift or stairs.
