Proof of identity

Proof of identity is a document that shows you are who you say you are, usually an official document with your photograph. It's different from proof of address, which shows where you live.

At Wigwam

When you book, our booking FAQ says: "You will need to supply two forms of ID, a photo one and a copy of a recent utility bill. We use a fraud protection system called 'Stripe Identity' which will match your document to your identity." So the photo ID proves who you are, and the utility bill proves your address.

The check doesn't stop at booking. Our terms (clause 14) say: "We may (but are not obliged to) require proof of identity from You or any other person at any time and, at Our sole discretion, may refuse access to the Facility to any person who is unable to produce satisfactory proof."

Why it matters

The check protects what you store. Only you and the people you authorise can use your unit (clause 14), and an identity check at booking makes it harder for someone to rent a unit in another person's name.

Two practical points follow from clause 14:

  • Anyone you send may be asked too. If a family member, colleague or removals crew is collecting for you, tell them to bring photo ID.
  • "May" means it isn't guaranteed to happen on every visit, but being unable to show ID when asked can mean being turned away.

Our online quote tool lists what we need as "Photo ID (driving licence or passport)". If you have a different photo ID, or none, ask us before you book. Ask too if you're booking under a trading name or for a company: call 0800 2545585.
