Removal blanket

A removal blanket (also called a moving, furniture or transit blanket) is a heavy textile blanket, often padded, wrapped round furniture and appliances to protect them from knocks, scratches and scuffs while they're carried and driven. It's reusable padding for the move, which is what sets it apart from a sofa cover or mattress bag, usually polythene (they keep dust and drips off but don't cushion) and from a dust sheet (a thin cover for dust, not knocks).

At Wigwam

Our Box Shop sells one, listed as Furniture Blanket: 1500 x 2000mm, £5.00 as listed in September 2026 (the product page's price data marks it as including VAT; the page text doesn't say), for delivery to your door. The shop doesn't state a delivery charge; ask on 0800 2545585. The product page calls it "thick, durable", made from "strong, heavy-duty textile fibres", with "premium cushioning". It doesn't give the blanket's thickness, weight or fibre, or say whether it's quilted. If that matters for what you're moving, ask us on 0800 2545585 how thick and heavy it is and what it's made of before you order.

In the van, then in the unit

Wrap arms, legs and corners first, and hold the blanket on with packing tape round the blanket, never on the furniture's surface. Our furniture guide recommends moving blankets because "They cushion delicate items and absorb bumps during transport."

For a long stay, use breathable covers, not plastic. The product page says the blanket protects furniture "during moving or storage", but it doesn't say whether it breathes, so ask on 0800 2545585 before relying on it as the stay-on cover. The same guide says: "Avoid plastic covers that trap moisture; use breathable fabrics instead to let air circulate." Our blanket is textile, not polythene, but its fibre isn't stated, so for months in the unit the dependable cover is cotton: an old sheet or duvet cover (see breathable cover).
Trade or removals use? The product page lists it for "Professional moving companies" and "Renovation and decorating projects". Booking a container? Ask us before you book whether a container or an indoor unit suits upholstered or veneered pieces. Our booking system describes the Chipping Norton and Shipston-on-Stour containers as insulated; for any other container, ask when you book.
