Double-wall box

A double-wall box is a cardboard box made from corrugated board with two wavy (fluted) layers between three flat liners. That extra layer makes it stronger and more resistant to crushing than a single-wall box, which has one fluted layer between two liners. You can tell them apart by looking at a cut edge.

At Wigwam

Every box in our Box Shop is double-walled. Prices as listed in September 2026:

Box Size Each Pack of 10
Medium 457 x 330 x 330mm £3.50 £25.00
Large 450 x 450 x 500mm £4.50 £35.00
Extra Large (the tall box) 450 x 450 x 750mm £5.25 £45.00
Wardrobe Box, with hanging rail 508 x 457 x 1016mm £9.99 not sold in packs

The Medium box has the longest base side (457mm), but the Large is wider and taller, so it holds about twice as much: roughly 50 litres for the Medium, 101 for the Large and 152 for the Extra Large, from the outside dimensions. No weight limit is published for any of them.

Our moving kits bundle them with tape (£1.99 on its own), a marker pen (£1.99) and, in the two bigger kits, a 750mm x 25m roll of bubble wrap (£14.99). Against the same items bought separately, at the Box Shop's September 2026 prices (the boxes, packs and kits were shown as sale prices; the tape, pen and bubble wrap weren't):

Kit Contents Kit price Same items bought separately Difference
Student 5 medium, 5 large, tape, pen £35.00 £43.98 as single boxes kit saves £8.98
Standard 10 medium, 10 large, 5 Extra Large, tape, pen, bubble wrap £99.99 £105.22 using the packs of ten kit saves £5.23
Large 15 medium, 15 large, 10 Extra Large, tape, pen, bubble wrap £195.00 £163.97 using packs of ten plus singles kit costs £31.03 more

So for a bigger move, packs of ten were the cheaper way to buy at those prices. Prices change, so compare on the day. Buy online from our Box Shop, which delivers to your door. Our Chipping Norton page mentions an onsite packaging store, and our Shipston-on-Stour page lists packaging materials for sale at the site; at other sites, ask.

When it matters

In storage a box has to carry weight for weeks or months, not just survive a van ride. Use double-wall boxes for heavy things like books and kitchenware, anything fragile, and the bottom layer of every stack. Keep heavy items in medium boxes so they stay liftable, and put light, bulky things like bedding in the large and tall ones. Boxes of the same size stack more safely than a mix.
