There’s a particular kind of tired that comes from packing a car boot at the end of term. The mini fridge, the sports kit, boxes you never quite unpacked, and you still can’t work out where the rest is going to fit. Then you drive it all home, not knowing how much will make the same trip back in September.

For some students, that drive is a lot shorter than they think.

Why self storage actually helps a university student

Self storage frees up space you don’t have in halls or a shared house, and it removes the need to haul everything you own hundreds of miles home and back. You’re not signing up for a year. At Wigwam, the minimum rental is two weeks, so it fits round your term dates, not the other way round.

The space problem

Halls rooms and student houses are small, and they get smaller the moment a term’s belongings pile up in the corner. A storage unit takes the overflow, so what’s left feels like a room again.

The end-of-term scramble

Packing up while you’re also revising, travelling, or starting a summer job is a lot to hold at once. Knowing your things are safe and close by takes one thing off that list.

Which Wigwam towns are genuinely university towns

If you’re studying in Bath, Reading, Cheltenham or Lincoln, your nearest Wigwam isn’t just in the same postcode area. It’s in the same town as your campus.

National chains tend to talk about being “near universities nationwide” without naming one. Wigwam’s footprint is smaller, but four of our fifteen towns are genuine university towns:

Wigwam site Nearby university Our page confirms
Wigwam Self Storage Bath Uni of Bath; Bath Spa Uni Centrally positioned, large student population
Wigwam Self Storage Reading Uni of Reading (Whiteknights) ~2 miles / 10 mins from Reading centre via A4
Wigwam Self Storage Cheltenham University of Gloucestershire Heart of Cheltenham, off the high street
Wigwam Self Storage Lincoln Uni of Lincoln (Brayford Pool) On Greetwell Road, close to the centre

Reading is the one site where we can put a distance on it, so we’ve used it. For Bath, Cheltenham and Lincoln, the honest fact is town-level: your campus and your nearest Wigwam are in the same place.

Studying somewhere else? Dorking and Leatherhead sit within reach of the University of Surrey in Guildford, and Tewkesbury and Bromsgrove sit in the wider Gloucestershire and Worcestershire corridor, though that tie is looser. Check your nearest location to see what’s closest.

A real scenario: moving out at the end of term

Picture a Reading student clearing out halls in June: a desk lamp, a duvet, a box of kitchen things, some sports kit, a winter coat nobody wants on the train. Instead of a parent’s car and a two-hour drive, it goes into a Wigwam unit ten minutes from campus, and the summer job can happen without it hanging over anyone.

What actually goes into storage

Usually it’s the bulky, seasonal or in-between stuff: sports equipment, bedding, kitchen items, boxes of books, the things you don’t need day to day but don’t want to throw away.

Getting back to it next term

Coming back in September to a unit exactly as you left it, rather than a spare room full of someone else’s things, makes the return feel like a fresh start rather than a scramble.

What it actually costs and how it works

Here’s the whole picture. Minimum rental: two weeks. A deposit is required at booking. To end your rental, give fourteen days’ notice; any paid days you haven’t used are refunded. Access is unlimited between 6am and 10pm, seven days a week, and every unit is individually alarmed with smart entry.

How long can I rent for

Two weeks is the minimum, with no fixed-term contract locking you in beyond that. Rent for the summer, a single term, or as long as you need.

Access and security, plainly

You can get to your things any day between 6am and 10pm. That’s separate from the continuous alarm monitoring on every unit, which runs around the clock whether or not the site is open for access.

Deposit and notice

A deposit is taken at the start. Give fourteen days’ notice when you want to leave, and you’ll be refunded for any paid days you didn’t use. Three separate facts, worth knowing on their own.

What it costs right now

Wigwam runs a first-weeks discount that varies by site and changes over time, so we won’t quote a figure here that might be out of date. Check the student storage page for the current offer.

How Wigwam compares with leaving things in halls or driving them home

Halls storage, where it exists at all, isn’t always reliable. Driving everything home solves the problem for a day, but means the same round trip again in a few months. Self storage sits between the two: closer than home, more dependable than hoping halls has space. If you want the fuller comparison, we’ve written more on that elsewhere on the site.

Who this actually helps

If you’re a parent handling the end-of-year move-out, this is one thing you can tick off without being there in person, quiet reassurance rather than another job on the list. If you’re the student sorting it yourself, it’s a small, practical way of handling your own things without defaulting to a parent’s spare room.

Where to go next

For unit sizes and current pricing, head to the student storage page. If you’re in Bath, Reading, Cheltenham or Lincoln, go straight to your town’s page above. Anywhere else, the full list of Wigwam locations will show you what’s nearest.

The drive home doesn’t have to be the only option. For four university towns, the answer is already round the corner.
