The room you’re sitting in right now stops being yours the moment term ends, whether or not your belongings are still in it. So before you decide whether storage is worth bothering with, it’s worth knowing: for most students, leaving it in halls was never actually an option.

If your clearance deadline is already this week, skip to what happens if you miss it, then straight to a quote. Not sure whether your contract requires clearance? Read on. Can You Actually Leave Your Things in Halls Over the Break?

Usually, no. Most UK halls contracts run 38 to 44 weeks, and those require the room fully cleared before the summer vacation, often before Christmas and Easter too. Only students on longer 51-week tenancies can typically leave a room as-is.

What most halls contracts actually say

The University of Manchester’s own accommodation guidance states plainly that belongings are not insured outside the dates of the licence agreement, and that if items are left behind, daily charges apply until the room is cleared, with uncollected items potentially disposed of.

Does this apply to Christmas and Easter too, or just summer?

Summer is consistently the strictest, since rooms are needed for cleaning, maintenance and often re-letting to conference guests. Christmas and Easter vary more by institution, some contracts include vacation residence, and a few offer a paid keep-your-room option. Check your own contract rather than assuming either extreme.

What Happens If You Don’t Clear Your Room in Time?

Daily charges, disposal or donation, not vague trouble.

Daily charges and disposal, what universities actually do

Manchester states daily charges apply until a room is cleared. Imperial College London’s departure guidance states belongings left in a bedroom, kitchen, laundry room or bicycle store will be disposed of within a set window of the departure deadline, sometimes as little as 24 hours.

Why this catches first-years out

A clearance deadline notice often lands with days, not weeks, of warning, and first-years facing this for the first time are the most likely to be caught out. Returning students at least know what’s coming from having lived through it once, a first-year is often mid-exam-stress when the notice lands, which is exactly the wrong moment to be sorting storage from scratch.

Is Your Stuff Even Insured If You Leave It in Halls?

No. Manchester’s own wording is that belongings are not insured outside the dates of the licence agreement, standard across UK halls generally.

What “not insured outside your licence dates” actually means

Once term ends, anything still in the room is uninsured regardless of whether it later gets charged for, donated or disposed of. That’s a real gap for a laptop, a bike or a games console, exactly the items most likely to be left behind because they’re awkward to take home for a short break. Wigwam offers optional storage-goods insurance, see our student storage page for current terms.

Storage vs Leaving It in Halls: The Real Comparison

Once you know clearance is usually required and uninsured, the actual choice is what to do with the gap between deadlines.

Leaving it in halls A Wigwam storage unit
Do you keep the space? Usually no, most contracts require full clearance before summer, often before Christmas and Easter too Yes, the unit is yours for exactly as long as you book it
What happens if you leave things anyway Daily charges may apply until cleared; items may be disposed of within a short window; some are donated Nothing is touched, charged or disposed of without your instruction
Is it insured? No, not outside your licence dates Optional insurance available, see current terms
Minimum commitment Tied to your existing contract length, no flexibility 2-week minimum, 14-day notice, refund on unused paid days
Access while stored None, the room isn’t yours during the vacation Unlimited access 6am-10pm, 7 days a week, via smart entry

A first-year on a standard contract who assumes their room is theirs until they personally decide to clear it typically gets a fixed deadline notice with days, not weeks, of warning. A student who’s already booked a unit for the vacation weeks has solved that problem before it becomes one.

A Bath Student’s Decision: A Real Scenario

Picture a student at Wigwam Self Storage Bath on a standard-length contract, facing a fixed clearance date at the end of term. Rather than discovering the deadline at the worst possible moment, they book a unit for exactly the vacation weeks, two weeks minimum, with unused days refunded if they end up needing less time than planned.

What You Actually Get With a Wigwam Unit

The real terms, plainly.

Booking for exactly the weeks you need

The minimum term is two weeks. A deposit applies, with 14 days’ notice to end the agreement, and any unused paid days are refunded, so you’re not over-committing to a service sized for a full year.

Getting in when you need to, honestly

Access runs 6am to 10pm, seven days a week, via smart entry, not around the clock. Units are individually alarmed, with separate CCTV monitoring across the site.

Does This Apply to Every Vacation, or Just the Summer?

Summer is consistently the strictest.

Why summer is different

Rooms are needed for cleaning, maintenance and often conference-guest re-letting over summer, which is why clearance requirements are most consistent then.

What to check in your own contract

Check your own licence agreement’s contract length and vacation-residence terms rather than assuming either extreme applies to you.
