Does storage make sense if you don’t have a fixed move date yet?

Yes. When orders keep slipping a week at a time, it gets hard to commit to anything else, and that’s simply what a moving posting feels like from the inside. Month-to-month terms exist precisely for this kind of open-ended timing, so you don’t need a fixed move date before you start a storage plan. Begin when you’re ready. Give notice when you’re not. Nobody’s asking you to guess a date the MOD’s own paperwork hasn’t settled on yet either.

If you’re in one of these situations, here’s where to go next:

  • No fixed date yet. Read the timeline below, it explains what’s settled in a posting move and what’s still open.
  • Doing this largely solo. Jump to how someone else can still get into your unit while you’re away.
  • Moving into or out of quarters with more than fits in a car boot. Jump to container storage.
  • You just want to see the site. Go straight to Wigwam Self Storage Warminster.

What’s actually fixed and what’s still moving in a posting cycle

Even the MOD’s own paperwork doesn’t work to a date you’d recognise as fixed. The only genuinely locked-in point in the whole cycle is the window in which you can submit a disturbance expense claim, and even that opens rather than fixes anything. Everything else, from the exact reporting date to how long packing takes if you’re doing it without help, stays typical rather than guaranteed. That’s the real reason a storage contract that demands a fixed term is fighting the wrong problem: it’s asking for certainty the posting cycle itself doesn’t produce yet.

Stage Typically settled Often still open
Assignment or posting notified Destination unit or garrison Exact reporting or move date
Admin process opens Which official moving scheme applies, Unit HR advised Firm removals or storage dates
Disturbance expense window opens Claim can be submitted from 45 days before the expected move date The actual move may still shift after the window opens
Move week Removal or collection day, once set Your own packing and handover pace, especially if you’re doing it alone
Post-move settling New quarters or accommodation address Whether everything’s needed immediately or some of it can stay stored

This table is directional, not a guaranteed timeline. Check your own unit’s guidance for what applies to you specifically.

The one date that is actually fixed

The 45-day disturbance expense claim window is the one point in this whole process you can rely on: claims can be submitted from 45 days before your expected move date, via the official MOD process. It’s worth being precise about what that is and isn’t. It’s a paperwork deadline on the pay side, not a notice period for the posting itself. Nobody promises you 45 days’ warning of a move. What’s promised is that the claim window opens 45 days out from whatever date you’re eventually given.

Why the admin process itself assumes things will move

The self-arrange route for moving your own belongings runs through Unit HR first, not through you booking a removals firm off your own back. There are three official schemes for moving personal effects, and which one applies to you is something Unit HR or your Personnel Office advises on, not something you decide alone. Built into that process is an assumption that things will need confirming and re-confirming as the date firms up. A system built on approval at every stage was never going to hand out fixed dates months in advance.

What this means for when you start storage

Because none of that is fixed, Wigwam’s month-to-month terms exist specifically so you’re not penalised for a date that moves. There’s a deposit, two weeks’ notice to leave, and any days you don’t use are refunded, the full terms are on our forces-families storage page. Your date isn’t fixed yet. Your storage plan shouldn’t need it to be either.

A plan that doesn’t need your date to be fixed first

That’s the shape of the plan: you start when you’re ready, not when a contract says you should be, and you leave on short notice rather than waiting out a fixed term that never matched your actual dates. Sign up to something and lose money when the date changes: that’s the usual worry with an uncertain move, and it doesn’t apply here, because notice is short and unused days are refunded.

How the terms work

Deposit, two weeks’ notice, unused days refunded, see the full terms on our forces-families storage page.

If you’re managing this alone, someone else can still get in

If you’re doing the recce, the packing decisions and the booking calls without your partner physically there, you can still share access to your unit. The account holder can share smart entry access with a specific person, whether that’s a family member, a friend, or someone collecting or dropping something off on your behalf, through the app.

How smart entry access-sharing actually works

Smart entry uses an app with Bluetooth unlock, and there’s a fob fallback if you or the person you’re sharing access with doesn’t have a smartphone. As the account holder, you choose who else can get in and share access with them directly. It’s a straightforward extension of the same system you’d use yourself, not a separate scheme with its own paperwork.

One thing smart entry doesn’t remove: someone still needs to be there

Wigwam’s sites are unmanned, and that doesn’t change just because access has been shared. If a courier or a removals contractor needs to get in, either you or the person you’ve shared access with has to be physically present. Smart entry makes it possible for someone other than you to get in. It doesn’t let a third party in on their own.

Container storage for the bigger moves in or out of quarters

Wigwam Self Storage Warminster offers on-site container storage, and it’s a genuine option when the move involves a full household rather than a few boxes, moving into Service Family Accommodation with more than it can hold, or moving out of quarters into a bigger private let.

When a container makes more sense than an indoor unit

Container storage suits volume: full household contents, furniture, the accumulated life of a posting or two. An indoor unit suits smaller loads and more frequent access. Neither is about cost, it’s about how much you’re moving and how often you’ll need to get at it. See container storage for how it works at this site.

Warminster is a garrison town, and this page knows it

The garrison is part of what Warminster is, not an add-on to the town. Wigwam Self Storage Warminster sits close to it, and a posting move here means something a generic storage page a hundred miles away can’t really speak to. Waterloo Lines, Battlesbury Barracks, Harman Lines: names most people locally know without thinking about it, part of the town’s shape rather than a directory of who’s currently posted where. Units move. Postings change. The garrison itself doesn’t.

What Wigwam can’t help with, and where to actually get that answer

Wigwam doesn’t advise on MOD entitlements, disturbance allowances, or which official moving scheme applies to you. That’s not our area, and pretending otherwise would do you more harm than good. What we can help with is sizing, availability, access, pricing, invoicing and booking, the practical side of storing your things while the rest of the move sorts itself out.

Where to check your entitlements

Start with your Unit HR or Personnel Office, they’re the ones who confirm which moving scheme applies to your situation. For the wider process, discovermybenefits.mod.gov.uk sets out the official routes, including the self-arrange option and the approval process it requires. That’s where to go for anything specific to your own posting, not here.

The move you can’t fully plan yet, run the way you run everything else

Not having a fixed date yet doesn’t mean not having a plan. It means building the plan around the one thing you can’t control, rather than pretending you can. You’re already the one holding the move together: the recce, the calls to Unit HR, the decisions about what gets packed first, usually without anyone stopping to ask if you’re managing, because everyone assumes you are. That’s not a gap to be rescued from. It’s competence that doesn’t get named enough. Wigwam Self Storage Warminster is set up to be the one part of this move that doesn’t need your date to be fixed first.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Month-to-month terms mean you can start when you’re ready and give notice when your date’s confirmed, rather than needing a fixed date before you begin.

Yes, the account holder can share smart entry access with a chosen person. Because the site is unmanned, that person, or you, still needs to be physically present for anyone to get in.

No. That’s a question for your Unit HR or Personnel Office, or the official guidance at discovermybenefits.mod.gov.uk. Wigwam can help with sizing, availability, access, pricing and booking, not entitlements.

I have used the storage at Cheltenham for nearly two years now and have always been glad I made the change from a large facility in Kingsditch. I recall leaving a glowing review of Casey and his team when I first took on the unit. Just yesterday I left a less than complimentary review but have discovered my frustration at the time was due to misleading info I obtained over the Internet and nothing to do with Wigwam. So that review is withdrawn and I continue to recommend Wigwam as a convenient town centre facility, well run and utilising a high tech, easy to use entry system.
