Ceiling height

Ceiling height is the distance from a storage unit's floor to its ceiling. Together with the height of the door opening, it decides whether a tall item fits upright and how high you can stack. It isn't part of a unit's size in square feet, which measures the floor only.

At Wigwam

We list units by floor area (square feet and square metres). Sizes are approximate, and for indoor units and containers we don't publish ceiling or door height; for Chipping Norton's drive-up units, door height is on our vehicle storage page. Clause 26 of our terms says "Unit sizes are approximate. If You have exact requirements, You must check with Us before signing this Agreement as, by signing, You agree to the actual size of the Unit and not any represented unit size."

Some units on the second floor at Lincoln are listed as restricted height; if height matters, ask us before you book.

Our containers are listed by floor area and footprint only: 20ft x 8ft at Chipping Norton and Shipston-on-Stour, 10ft x 8ft also at Chipping Norton, and 40ft x 8ft at Warminster. Our pages don't give a container's height, or say whether those are internal or external measurements. See unit dimensions for what the footprints mean.

Choosing a unit when height matters

  • Measure your tallest items first. A wardrobe, an upright fridge, a headboard or a mattress stood on its side sets the height you need. The door opening can be lower than the ceiling, so an item has to pass through it too.
  • Same floor area, different space. Two units with the same square feet can hold different amounts if their ceilings differ, so don't size up on floor area alone to fit a tall piece.
  • Stack only to a height you can reach. Heaviest boxes at the bottom. Our terms say goods with built-in batteries must be "not stacked and are stored allowing air circulation" (clause 20.1(b)).
  • Moving house: give us the height of your tallest piece of furniture. Storing business stock on shelving: give us the height of the shelving before you buy it.
