Unit dimensions are a storage unit's measurements: length and width, which multiply to give the floor area, plus height and door size. Units are usually sold by floor area alone, so two units of the same size can be different shapes: a 50 sq ft unit could be 5ft by 10ft or about 7ft by 7ft. A long sofa or tall wardrobe can fail to fit a unit with enough floor.
At Wigwam
We list units by floor area in square feet and square metres. For indoor units we don't publish length, width, height or door size. Clause 26 of our terms says: "Unit sizes are approximate. If You have exact requirements, You must check with Us before signing this Agreement as, by signing, You agree to the actual size of the Unit and not any represented unit size." It also says "You must ensure the Unit is suitable for the storage of the Goods intended to be stored in it", and advises inspecting the unit first. Clause 46(b) says website descriptions give "an approximate idea" and don't form part of the agreement.
Our vehicle storage page gives more for drive-up units at Chipping Norton: 2.8m deep (90 sq ft) or 5.6m deep (180 sq ft), with a roller shutter door 2.36m wide. That page doesn't give the units' width, and like any website description its figures are approximate (clause 46(b)). For door height, see that page or ask us.
Some units on the second floor at Lincoln are listed as restricted height; if height matters, ask us before you book.
Our booking system also lists these:
| Unit | Listed as |
|---|---|
| Storage locker (Bath and Leatherhead booking lists) | "3ft x 3ft" |
| Container, Chipping Norton and Shipston-on-Stour | 20ft x 8ft |
| Container, Chipping Norton | 10ft x 8ft |
| Container, Warminster | 40ft x 8ft |
Our pages don't say whether the container figures are internal or external, and don't give a container's height or door size; the 20ft container entry explains why that matters.
If something long, tall or bulky has to fit
- Moving house: measure your longest, widest and tallest pieces, legs and cornices included, and the diagonal of anything you'll turn through the door.
- Business stock: tell us your pallet or shelving footprint and height before you book.
What to ask on 0800 2545585
Ring us with your measurements and ask:
- What are the length, width and height of the unit I'm booking?
- How wide and how high is its door?
- For a container: is the listed footprint inside or outside?
- If the unit is upstairs: will my longest piece fit in the lift? See ground-floor units for which floors have a lift.
