How do I give notice to leave my storage unit?

Tell us in writing, by email, by post or by hand, and give us at least the number of days shown on the front page of your storage agreement (the Cover Sheet). That's normally 14 days. Your agreement ends on the date you give us, called the Termination Date, and by the close of business that day your unit needs to be empty, clean and in good repair. You pay storage fees up to that date, and our move-out FAQ says we refund any unused days on your contract after the notice period (it isn't in the licence terms, so ask us to confirm it in writing). The deposit you paid when you booked comes back within 21 days of the agreement ending, less any deductions (clause 4).

How to send your notice

Our terms (clause 39) say notice to end the agreement "must be in writing". A phone call or a chat on site doesn't end it, although we're always happy to talk it through first.

How you send it Where to When it counts as received
Email info@wigwamstorage.co.uk One day after you send it
Post (pre-paid) The address on your Cover Sheet 48 hours after posting
By hand The address on your Cover Sheet When it's delivered

To end your agreement, or for any other formal notice, write to info@wigwamstorage.co.uk, or deliver or post it to the address on your Cover Sheet. Clause 39 of the terms names these routes. For everyday questions, email hello@wigwamstorage.co.uk or call 0800 2545585.

Put these in your notice so there's nothing to chase:

  • your name, as it appears on the agreement. If you're giving notice for someone else, for example as their executor or attorney, give their name and account details as well as your own;
  • the site and your unit number;
  • the date you want the agreement to end;
  • a phone number, and the email or postal address where we should confirm it and send any refund.

Keep a copy of the email or a proof of posting.

If you're clearing a relative's unit and the person named on the agreement has died or can no longer manage their affairs, call us before sending anything so we can agree who gives notice. What happens to a storage unit when the renter dies covers this.

Working out your date

The Termination Date "must be at least the number of days indicated on the Cover Sheet" (clause 41). Check that number on your own agreement rather than relying on a figure you've heard: it's normally 14 days, and yours is the one that counts.

Count your days from when the notice is treated as received, not from when you press send. Say your Cover Sheet shows 14 days. If you email on Monday 5 October, it counts as received on Tuesday 6 October, so pick Tuesday 20 October or later. If you post it the same Monday, it counts as received on Wednesday 7 October, so pick Wednesday 21 October or later. Choosing a date a day or two later than the minimum costs little and removes any argument.

Clause 41 lets you give notice "at any time". You can give notice today and keep clearing the unit during the notice period, as long as it's empty by close of business on the Termination Date.

If you're moving house and your completion date might slip, choose the end date you're confident of. If your plans change after you've given notice, tell us as soon as you know, and before your end date: call 0800 2545585 or email us, and get the new date confirmed in writing (our terms let the end date change only by written agreement, clause 41). Keeping the unit is usually straightforward, and the agreement simply carries on, but it doesn't happen automatically; anything left after the end date can be treated as abandoned. If you want to leave sooner than your notice allows, you can clear the unit early, but fees still run to the end of the notice period. See also can I keep my storage unit longer than planned?

On the day you leave

By the close of business on your Termination Date, clause 41 asks you to:

  • remove everything from the unit;
  • leave it "in a clean condition and in a good state of repair to the satisfaction of Us".

Sweep it out, take all rubbish away and don't leave packing materials behind. If the unit is left dirty or damaged, clause 23 lets us keep the deposit (where one was taken), charge a cleaning fee or recover reasonable repair and rubbish-disposal costs. There's more in do I need to leave my storage unit clean?

Check your belongings as you take them out. If anything is lost or damaged, clause 42 asks you to tell us "as soon as is reasonably possible". Once you've cleared the unit, send us a short email to say so.

Anything left behind after the Termination Date can be treated as abandoned (clause 7). We'd write to you first, telling you to collect it, and then it may be sold or disposed of. You'd pay storage fees for that time plus the disposal costs. What happens to anything left in a storage unit explains the steps.

What happens to your money

Storage fees are taken in advance, 4-weekly, so your last payment may cover days after your Termination Date. You pay fees up to the Termination Date. Our move-out FAQ says that after the notice period we refund any unused days on your contract. That promise isn't written into the licence terms, so ask us to confirm it in writing when you give notice, and ask when the refund will be paid and whether it comes back automatically to the card or account you pay from. If that account is closed or frozen (for example after a death), tell us where the refund should go and ask what we need to pay it elsewhere.

On the deposit: when you book, you pay a refundable deposit of two weeks' rent at your unit's standard weekly rate. Clause 4 says it, "or the balance of it after any appropriate deductions for unpaid Fees, repairs, cleaning or other charges", is refunded by cheque or electronic transfer within 21 days of termination. If your deposit hasn't arrived after 21 days, call us on 0800 2545585.

If you leave without notice, or can't give the full notice

Emptying the unit and cancelling your payments doesn't end the agreement. Written notice does, so without it the fees keep running. If they go unpaid they become a debt, and clause 6 then lets us refuse access, overlock the unit, use your deposit against what's owed and, in the end, sell or dispose of what's inside, after writing to you first.

If you need to go sooner than your notice allows, still send notice straight away. Clause 41 says that if you give less than the required notice, we can "retain from the Deposit, or make a charge for, apportioned Storage Fees": in plain terms, you pay a share of fees for the notice you didn't give. Sending it today keeps that share as small as possible.

Other situations

If two people are named on the agreement, clause 39 says notice from any one of them is enough. If you're separating, agree between you who sends it before either of you does.

A business follows the same steps. Put the company name as it appears on the agreement at the top of the notice.

If we tell you in writing about a price or terms change, you can end the agreement without charge before the change takes effect, by giving notice the same way (clause 45).

If you booked without visiting the site and have changed your mind, you have 14 days from our acceptance of your order to cancel, and for that you can call as well as email or write (clause 40). See can I cancel before I move in?

And if you just need a different size, you may not need to leave at all: can I change to a bigger or smaller unit?

Before you send it

If you want to check the notice days on your Cover Sheet, or talk through an end date that's awkward for you, call us on 0800 2545585 before you send your notice.
