Is Wigwam a member of the Self Storage Association?

Yes. The Self Storage Association UK (SSA UK) runs a storage site directory that it describes as a way "to search for your closest SSA UK member", and on 30 September 2026 it listed Wigwam facilities, for example near Chipping Norton, Bath and Dorking. SSA gives that listing to its Full members, the members that must meet its Membership Standard: Full members receive "a listing on the SSA UK website Storage Facility Locator". SSA lists members site by site, so search the directory for the site you're considering; it takes a couple of minutes, and the steps are below.

What the SSA directory showed on 30 September 2026

We searched the directory by site postcode at a 10-mile radius. The results included Wigwam listings near Chipping Norton, Bath and Dorking, among others. Listings are titled "Wigwam Self Storage"; the line beneath can carry a company name instead, for example "Wigwam Storage Limited" near Bath and "Wigwam Storage Management" near Lincoln. Searching RH4 1AA, the directory listed the Dorking site as "Wigwam Self Storage", with the line "Dorking, Unit 3, Parsonage Mills, Curtis Road, Dorking, RH4 1AA, England".

The directory doesn't say why a site isn't listed. SSA's membership page sets Full membership fees by site, with an "Additional fee (per site)", so a listing for one Wigwam site doesn't show another. If your site doesn't appear, call us on 0800 2545585 and ask before you book.

Is Wigwam SSA accredited?

Our About page says we are "fully accredited members of the UK Self Storage Association". SSA's own membership page lists four ways to be part of the association: Full Member, SSA UK Subscriber, Supplier Member and Investor Member. None of them is called "accredited". The accurate way to put it is the plain one: on 30 September 2026, Wigwam Self Storage was a member of SSA UK, and the directory shows which of our sites are listed.

What SSA membership means, in SSA's words

SSA UK describes itself as "the principal trade association representing both self storage operators and industry supplier members' interests in the UK."

Its customer FAQ answers the trust question directly: "The SSA UK has a Membership Standard in place designed to ensure the safety and security of self storage facilities and the responsible conduct of those operating them". The same FAQ sends customers to "the Storage Facility Locator on our website homepage" to find a member, and the search on SSA's home page is the Storage Site Directory, so the locator and the directory are the same search.

For an operator like us, the rule for Full membership is its Membership Standard: "To become a full member of the Association your site and company must adhere to the Membership Standard set out by the SSA UK and its board of directors." SSA also has provisional members, and says: "Once the standard is reached, a provisional member may apply for an upgrade to Full membership". SSA says the Standard covers a number of areas including facilities, units and containers, security, operating procedures, contracts and consumer protection, managing customers, and customers' insurance. The full text is in SSA's members-only area, so neither we nor you can link to it. SSA's membership, Membership Standard and customer pages don't say how often it checks members against the Standard.

SSA's customer pages add three specifics:

  • "There is a European Standard for self storage that specifies minimum conditions for security and customer protection. All Self Storage Association UK (SSA UK) members must meet this standard to maintain their membership."
  • "The SSA UK Membership Standard requires a site to have CCTV monitoring systems, a secure perimeter and to meet all fire and safety regulations."
  • Full members may use "the SSA UK Logo on marketing materials, websites and correspondence to demonstrate compliance with the standard". SSA tells customers to "look out for our logo". On 30 September 2026 it appeared in the footer of our website.

On 30 September 2026, SSA's Tick Box campaign page listed "Wigwam Self Storage" under the heading "The following SSA UK members are participating in the Tick Box campaign". SSA says the Tick Box code of practice "sets out simple procedures aimed at preventing the fraudulent storage of counterfeit and other illicit or unsafe goods, while helping self storage facility owners be sure of who is really using their premises." For what we ask for at booking, see what documents you need to rent a storage unit.

What membership doesn't do

SSA is a trade association, not a regulator. In its own words, "Self storage in the UK is a self-regulated industry", which is why it tells customers to make sure there is "a comprehensive contract" with their provider.

Membership doesn't insure your things either. Our terms make it "a condition of this Agreement that the Goods remain adequately insured by You at all times for their Replacement Value" (clause 31), through our contents protection or your own policy. SSA gives the same advice: "If your goods are worth storing then they are worth insuring."

How to check it yourself

  1. Go to ssauk.com and find the Storage Site Directory on the home page.
  2. Enter the postcode or town of the site you're considering, and pick a radius.
  3. The results page shows 10 facilities at a time. If the count says more, press "Load more" before you decide a name isn't there.
  4. Check the listed address matches the site's page on our locations page.
  5. SSA says Full members receive "window stickers to display in each facility and a Full Membership Certificate", so you can ask to see them at the site.

A logo on any operator's website, ours included, is the operator's own claim. The directory is SSA's record, which is why it's the better check.

Checking us as a supplier, or for someone else

If you're a business or trader adding us to a supplier list, the directory result above is the evidence to record, with the date you checked. The directory results page has its own web address, so you can save it with your notes; for Dorking it is ssauk.com/storage-site-directory.html?q=RH4+1AA&radius=10. SSA's separate Supplier directory also listed Wigwam Storage Management Limited on 30 September 2026, and our page on Wigwam Self Storage and Wigwam Storage Management explains which company name to put on your records.

If you're arranging storage for a relative or an estate, search the postcode of the site you plan to use and keep the date with your notes.

If you already store with us and have a problem

Talk to us first on 0800 2545585. SSA doesn't act for customers: it says, "Although we do not represent customers of storage providers we do provide some information for customers to help you navigate the world of self storage." Its signposting page links to Citizens Advice, the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, the Consumer Association (Which?) and CEDR's arbitration service, among others, for independent help.

Find a site that suits you

Once you've checked the directory, find your nearest site on our locations page and get a price online, or call 0800 2545585. For more on how our sites are protected, read how secure is self storage.
