A 20ft container is a standard steel shipping container, 20ft long and 8ft wide on the outside (6.06m x 2.44m), used as a storage unit. One container supplier gives the inside of a standard 20ft container as about 19ft 3in long and 7ft 7in wide, about 146 sq ft of floor (the supplier rounds it to 150). As a storage unit it's usually drive-up: you park at the doors and load straight in.
At Wigwam
Our booking system lists 20ft x 8ft containers at Chipping Norton and Shipston-on-Stour, sold as 160 sq ft. Our pages don't say whether 20ft x 8ft is the internal or external measurement, so if your load is tight, ring 0800 2545585 and ask for the inside length and width before you book. Our container page says a 160 sq ft container can "comfortably hold the contents of a 3-bedroom home". For smaller loads, Chipping Norton also lists 10ft x 8ft containers, and our room-by-room size guide helps you judge. The containers at these two sites sit in an access-controlled compound monitored by CCTV.
The booking pages for both sites say: "We also insulate our containers to stop condensation." For any other container, ask when you book. Even in an insulated container, make sure everything going in is clean and completely dry; FAQ 33 covers condensation.
What it costs
Shipston-on-Stour's September 2026 price list shows a 160 sq ft container at £64 a week, or £256 per four weeks, before any introductory offer (£128 per four weeks for the first eight weeks if it applies); the list notes "First 8 Weeks 50% Off – Containers Only", but our booking pages don't tag the container with the offer, so check your quote and budget with the full price. It is the only 160 sq ft container price on our September 2026 lists. Chipping Norton's list has no container row, though its booking page tags both containers "First 4 weeks 50% off". A January 2020 post on our blog listed Chipping Norton containers "Starting at just £100 +VAT"; ask on 0800 2545585 which basis applies to your quote, and whether it's per week or per four weeks. Nothing is added at checkout: the total in your quote is what you pay, and our prices include VAT. That post says "+VAT", so ask whether its figure includes VAT; whether your invoice shows VAT you can reclaim is not published, so ask on 0800 2545585.
On top of rent, you pay a refundable deposit of two weeks' rent when you book, and contents cover is required: "All customers require contents protection for their stored goods". You can take our cover or "arrange insurance at your own expense". FAQ 60 sets out container costs in full.
