Bubble wrap

Bubble wrap is plastic sheeting with small pockets of trapped air, used to wrap fragile things so that knocks and pressure are absorbed by the bubbles rather than the item. It cushions against impact, but it doesn't let air through, so wrapped tight or taped shut, it holds moisture in as well.

At Wigwam

Our Box Shop sells two rolls, which the product pages describe as biodegradable (no standard is named). Prices as listed in September 2026, neither on sale (the product pages' price data marks them as including VAT; the page text doesn't say):

Product Coverage Price Price per m²
Bubble Wrap 500mmx10Mtr Green Bio 5 m² £6.99 about £1.40
Bubble Wrap 750mmx25Mtr Green Bio 18.75 m² £14.99 about £0.80

One 750mm x 25m roll comes in the Standard Moving Kit (£99.99, reduced from £126.48) and the Large Moving Kit (£195.00, reduced from £250.97). The shop offers delivery to your door but doesn't state a delivery charge; ask on 0800 2545585. Our Chipping Norton page lists an on-site packaging store selling bubble wrap, and our Bromsgrove and Lincoln cost guides say bubble wrap is "available at the facility". Ask the site whether that's the same rolls at the same price.

Using it in storage

Bubble wrap and packing paper do different jobs: our White Packing Paper's page sells it for wrapping and as "void-fill" that "prevents movement inside boxes", while the bubble wrap pages describe "cushioning" and "shock absorption".

Wrap each fragile piece on its own, fill the gaps so nothing shifts, and put lighter, fragile boxes on top. For china staying in storage for months, put packing paper against each piece and bubble wrap loosely round the outside, not taped airtight, and pack nothing while it's damp. The National Trust warns against sealing silver "in bubblewrap or plastic as these trap moisture", and for precious ceramics its guide How to care for your precious objects suggests "a strong plastic case wrapped in acid-free tissue paper and bubblewrap". The National Trust names acid-free tissue; our White Packing Paper is sold as ink-free, and its page doesn't say acid-free, so for heirlooms, ask on 0800 2545585 before relying on it. Towels and bedding you're packing anyway also cushion.

Moving to or from university? The 500mm roll's page lists "Students moving to and from university" among its uses. The Student Moving Kit's summary mentions bubble wrap, but its list of contents doesn't include a roll, so ask before counting on it.
