A late payment fee is a charge added when a payment isn't made by its due date, on top of the amount that was owed. In self storage, it's usually the first of several consequences of missing a payment.
At Wigwam
Our terms (clause 5) make you responsible for:
- "a Late Payment Fee each time a payment is late or cancelled" (5(b));
- any costs we incur in collecting late or unpaid Storage Fees, or in enforcing the agreement, including postal, telephone and debt collection costs (5(c)).
The conditions name the fee but not its amount, so ask us for the figure when you book.
The fee is only the first consequence. If you don't pay on the Due Date:
- Your introductory discount can be clawed back. "The value of any discounts and special offers (including periods of free storage) which You have received will be payable by You in full" (clause 6 (in the list that begins "You acknowledge that", point (c))).
- You can lose access. We may refuse access to the unit and the site while money is owed (clause 15) and overlock the unit until the debt is paid (clause 6(a)).
- Your goods can ultimately be sold. Clauses 6 to 10 set out our lien and the written notice we must send before any sale.
What to do if a payment will be late
Call us on 0800 2545585 before the Due Date, not after. The terms give no waiting period before access can be refused or the unit overlocked: clause 6 allows it "without further notice", and clause 15 "whether or not a formal demand for payment has been made". Make sure any payment you make clearly identifies your account: clause 5(a) says a payment isn't credited "unless You identify the payment clearly and as directed by Us". If you're struggling to pay more widely, our guide to missing a storage payment covers your options.
