Can I move my unit to a different Wigwam site?

Not as a transfer. Each storage agreement is for a unit at one site, so moving to another Wigwam site means giving written notice on your current unit and booking a new unit, on a new agreement, at the other site. The new booking takes its own refundable deposit of two weeks' rent plus your first four weeks' rent, and your old deposit is refunded within 21 days of the old agreement ending, less any deductions. Your notice period is the one on the front page of your agreement, normally 14 days. Start the new unit on or just before your moving day and time your notice to end just after it, and the overlap can come down to a day or two. If you only need a different size, change to a bigger or smaller unit at your current site.

Why a unit stays with its site

Our conditions define the "Facility" as the premises "the address of which is detailed on the Cover Sheet" (the front page of your agreement), and clause 1(a) lets you store your goods "in the Unit allocated to You by Us from time to time and only in that Unit", so your agreement belongs to one address. Our Managing Director's guides say the same: "There is no transfer of a single unit between sites, so treat it as closing one arrangement and opening another."

How to move your unit to another site, step by step

  1. Price the new site first. Check it has your size free, through the online quote or on 0800 2545585. Our locations page lists the sites.
  2. Book the new unit to start on or just before your moving day. The online quote lets you "book your unit up to 2 weeks in advance of your move-in date". If you run a business from the unit, plan the overlap so you can still reach your stock or tools on your busiest days.
  3. Give written notice on your current unit. Email info@wigwamstorage.co.uk, or post or hand it in to the address on your Cover Sheet (clause 39). Our move-out FAQ mentions hello@wigwamstorage.co.uk, which is for general queries; for formal notice, use info@ as clause 39 says. An email counts as received one day after you send it; a posted letter, 48 hours after. Your end date, called the Termination Date, must be at least the number of days shown on your Cover Sheet. Our guide to giving notice has what to include.
  4. Move your things across within access hours. Access is normally 6am to 10pm, but check both sites' pages, as Cheltenham's page also shows shorter hours. We can recommend local removals and man and van services.
  5. Leave the old unit empty and clean. Clause 41 says you must remove everything "before the close of business on the Termination Date". Close of business isn't published as a time, so be out early that day, or set your Termination Date a day later.

A worked example. Your Cover Sheet shows 14 days and you move on Thursday 15 October 2026. Email your notice on Thursday 1 October: it counts as received on Friday 2 October, so you can choose Friday 16 October as your Termination Date. Start the new unit on Thursday 15 October. You hold both units for two days, with the Friday spare if the move runs over.

Give less notice than your Cover Sheet requires and clause 41 lets us "retain from the Deposit, or make a charge for, apportioned Storage Fees".

What happens to my deposit and payments when I move sites?

At the new site. The deposit is two weeks' rent at your unit's standard weekly rate. After the first four weeks, rent is charged every four weeks (13 payments a year, not 12) from the new unit's own dates, and "2 weeks is our minimum term".

At the old site. Under clause 4, your deposit is refunded "by cheque or electronic transfer within 21 days of termination of this Agreement", less any deductions. If your last payment runs past your Termination Date, our move-out FAQ says we will "refund you your deposit and any unused days on your contract after the notice period".

So from the day you book the new unit until up to 21 days after your old agreement ends, you may have two deposits out. Whether your old deposit can be set against the new one isn't published; ask on 0800 2545585 before you book.

Contents cover. Clause 31 requires cover "at all times" while goods are in storage, so it must be in place at the new unit from the day your things go in: ours, or your own insurer's, with the new address. Whether our cover on your old unit carries across isn't published, so ask when you book.

How much will the unit at the new site cost?

Prices differ from site to site, so your quote for the new site is the figure that counts. If your new site isn't on our price list, such as Cheltenham, get a quote for it. Nothing is added at checkout: the total in your quote is what you pay, and our prices include VAT. For how our prices work by size, see how much it costs to store furniture.

Moving house to another area

If your move date isn't fixed yet, wait until exchange of contracts, when the completion date is set, before giving notice. If your completion slips after you've given notice, tell us as soon as you know, and before your end date: call 0800 2545585 or email us, and get the new date confirmed in writing (our terms let the end date change only by written agreement, clause 41). Keeping the unit is usually straightforward, and the agreement simply carries on, but it doesn't happen automatically; anything left after the end date can be treated as abandoned. If the sites are far apart, allow a longer overlap and check your removals firm covers both ends; the firms we recommend are local.

What to ask us before you book

  • whether your card or Direct Debit details carry across, or are set up afresh;
  • whether any introductory offer shown for the new site applies to you, and that it appears on your quote;
  • how far ahead you can reserve at the new site if your move is more than two weeks away, and whether today's price holds;
  • if you are arranging the move for a relative, whether we will take their notice, or book the new unit, through you (ring before you give notice for someone else).

When you're ready, get a price online for your new site, or call us on 0800 2545585 and we'll help you line up the dates.
