Long-term storage

Long-term storage is keeping belongings in storage for many months or years, for example while working abroad, after downsizing, or while an estate is settled. Over that length of time, the total cost, price changes, insurance and the condition of what's stored matter more than the start date.

At Wigwam

Long-term storage runs on the same rolling agreement as a two-week stay. There is no fixed term to sign up to, and you can leave by giving notice. Four things to plan for over a long stay:

  • Our price lists quote per four weeks, and a year is 13 four-week periods. The middle of the listed prices for a 50 sq ft unit across our sites' September 2026 lists is £143 per four weeks (not any one site's price), which is £1,859 over 52 weeks at that rate. Your site's price may be higher or lower. Check your agreement for how and when you're charged.
  • Prices can change. Clause 45 lets us change the storage fee or terms by written notice, taking effect on the first payment date at least 28 days after the notice. You can end the agreement without charge before the change takes effect.
  • Your goods must stay insured for their replacement value for the whole stay (clause 31). Values change over years, so review the figure now and then.
  • Clause 26 advises you to inspect the unit before you store and from time to time during the stay. On a long stay, that means planning visits, or sending someone you trust as your agent (clause 14), especially if you live abroad.

Packing for a long stay

Pack for the months ahead as well as the journey: clean and dry everything first, keep items off the floor, leave space for air around furniture, and use breathable covers rather than sealed plastic. Keep your contact details and payment card up to date too, because a missed payment on an account nobody is watching can lead to the steps in clause 6, including the unit being overlocked.
