For a stay of up to 16 weeks, our rent is less than a used 20ft box costs to buy, before you count what you'd get back by selling it; buying can come out cheaper over a long stay, if you have your own land with "hardstanding already in place" and are storing kit "that can shrug off temperature swings and a bit of condensation", as our guide puts it. At Shipston-on-Stour, our 160 sq ft (20ft x 8ft) container is £64 a week, or £256 every four weeks, on our September 2026 price list, so 16 weeks is £1,024. If you're a household moving or renovating, a trader with a yard, clearing a relative's home, or already renting from us, there's a section for you below.
What renting costs
| Stay | Shipston container at list price | With the offer on our price list |
|---|---|---|
| 4 weeks | £256 | £128 |
| 16 weeks | £1,024 | £768 |
| 26 weeks | £1,664 | £1,408 |
| 39 weeks (about nine months) | £2,496 | £2,240 |
| 52 weeks | £3,328 | £3,072 |
| 104 weeks | £6,656 | £6,400 |
| 156 weeks (three years) | £9,984 | £9,728 |
Our terms let us "vary the Storage Fee" by written notice, with the change taking effect on the first due date "not less than 28 days after the date of Our notice" (clause 45), so read the longer totals as today's list price.
Our price list shows 50% off the first eight weeks on Shipston's containers; if your quote doesn't show it, ask us before you book. Budget with the full price. Nothing is added at checkout: the total in your quote is what you pay, and our prices include VAT. Your quote also shows the deposit: two weeks' rent at the standard weekly rate, refunded within 21 days of your agreement ending (clause 4).
On top of the rent, you need contents cover: our terms make it "a condition of this Agreement that the Goods remain adequately insured by You at all times for their Replacement Value" (clause 31), through our contents protection or your own policy. You also lock the container yourself (clause 21); our Box Shop sells an 82mm heavy-duty container shutter padlock for £36; ask whether your container opens with smart entry or needs your own padlock when you book (more in do I need my own padlock?). There's no delivery, groundwork or resale: you give written notice when you're done, and the minimum stay is two weeks.
We also have containers at Chipping Norton (80 and 160 sq ft) and Warminster. Our booking system lists Warminster's as 320 sq ft (40ft x 8ft), so compare it with the price of a 40ft box, not the 20ft figures below. Neither site's container price is on our site-named price lists, so ask for a quote before you compare. Our short answer on whether units are inside or outside calls our containers "a limited selection", so if you need more than one, ask what's free.
What buying costs
These are figures named sellers listed on 30 September 2026. Each is one seller's figure, and Budget Shipping Containers' is its Q4 2025 average; neither is a market rate. Budget Shipping Containers adds that its figures are "based around major/large depot and port locations".
| Item | Seller and listed price |
|---|---|
| Used 20ft container, wind and watertight, 10 to 15 years old | Container Container (Parsons Containers Ltd, Darlington): £1,295 + VAT (£1,554 with VAT at 20%, our sum), "Subject to availability and delivery location" |
| Used 20ft container, guide price | Budget Shipping Containers: £1,050 + VAT, its "current average", "based on sales figures Q4 2025". It says its prices "do NOT include delivery" |
| Delivery of a 20ft container | Budget Shipping Containers: "around £150 + VAT if you are very local to one of our depots", up to "£1000 region" for remote areas. Container Container quotes delivery on request |
Then add what no seller lists for you: a level, solid base, insurance for the box and what's in it, and moving or selling it at the end. Get each one priced for your address before you compare.
Doing the sum for your own stay
Add up the box, VAT, delivery, the base, a lock and insurance, take off what you expect to get back when you sell, and compare that with our rent for the weeks you need. Those buying figures depend on your address and box, so we don't give a single break-even week.
For longer stays, our own comparison guide says "a container bought outright often works out cheaper over a year or more than paying monthly rent", on the conditions in the first paragraph. Taking each seller on its own, before a base, a lock, insurance or anything you get back by selling:
- Budget Shipping Containers: its £1,050 average plus its lowest delivery figure of £150 (for addresses "very local" to one of its depots) is £1,200 before VAT, or £1,440 with VAT at 20%.
- Container Container: £1,554 with VAT for the box alone, with delivery from Darlington quoted on request.
Our Shipston container is £1,664 for 26 weeks, £2,496 for 39 weeks and £3,328 for 52 weeks at list price. Those are rent totals to set against your own delivered price, not break-even points. Over stays like these, a bought box can come out cheaper if you have hardstanding and goods that can take condensation; your delivery quote, base, insurance and resale decide whether it does.
The sellers' prices above are quoted plus VAT, while ours include it, so compare like with like. Whether your invoice shows VAT you can reclaim is not published; ask on 0800 2545585.
Planning, if the container goes on your land
GOV.UK says: "To find out if your project will need planning permission, contact your local planning authority (LPA) through your local council." Ask before you pay for delivery. If your drive is in front of the house, check the Planning Portal's "No outbuilding on land forward of a wall forming the principal elevation" limit first: our guide to container storage or a container on your own land sets it out with the others.
For households moving or renovating
For a move, or a renovation that empties part of your home, renting keeps the cost to the weeks you use. Our guide says a self storage unit "tends to suit you if you are storing furniture, soft furnishings or household goods", and "renovation-displaced belongings" are on its list of goods for which a unit wins. For furniture over several months, an indoor unit at the same site is the other option: all three container sites also have indoor units. Storing a petrol mower or other fuelled machinery? Clause 18(c) rules out "petrol" and "oil", so drain them and ask us before bringing any engine.
Our booking system describes the Chipping Norton and Shipston-on-Stour containers as insulated (for any other container, ask when you book), but insulation can't remove moisture your goods bring in, and condensation damage stays at your risk (clause 30): see how to stop condensation in a container and what contents protection covers for damp.
For traders and businesses
With a secure yard and years of use ahead, buying can come out cheaper; without a yard, or for seasonal kit, rent. Clause 22 says you use the unit "solely for the purpose of storage", and 22(a) rules out using it as "offices" or "a home, business or mailing address". You can't "connect or provide any utilities or services to the Unit unless authorised by Us" (clause 22(e)), so plan to charge tools elsewhere. No "gas, paint, petrol, oil, cleaning solvents or compressed gases" (clause 18(c)), so drain fuel and ask us before bringing fuelled plant, and no "portable battery chargers, power banks or any similar portable power source" (clause 20(b)). Our contents protection page's list of prohibited items also names "power generators". Pack canvas, fabric and soft goods dry. Access is normally 6am to 10pm (check your site's page and confirm your hours when you book).
Clearing a relative's home
If the house is sold, a container bought for its drive has to be moved or sold too, while renting ends with written notice; if a crew loads for you, our notice guide says "someone from your side needs to be there if other people are handling your goods" (see do I have to be there on moving-in day?).
Already renting a container from us?
The rent you've paid is spent either way, so compare only the weeks still ahead with the cost of buying. If buying wins, give written notice; our move-out guide says we refund "any unused days on your contract after the notice period". See how do I move out of my unit?
